Comment:
[Nov 03 - Finally got around to updating this mix. I pulled two of the Gowan tracks which were nice tracks, but a little too sweet, and I also pulled one of the Jethro Tull tracks. I resequenced the track order a little, and the mix now starts off with a great archetypal instrumental by Kinesis indie-prog band Craft. I've had the Kinesis prog sampler 1 CD for years, and I have always felt that this particular tune epitomizes much of what prog rock is all about. The other new track I added is the nice moody piece "The Hanging Tree" by Arena. The mix now has a really nice feel to it, full of great melodies and touching on pop at times. I couldn't honestly say it is representative of the progressive rock genre as a whole, but it is representative of everything I like about progressive rock. Cheers!]This is a mix I've been promising to make for Anne for several months, even though I'm not sure if she really wants it or if she's just humoring me. I put in a few tracks I know she already likes (Zebra, Yes) and a few more that are a bit more on the pop side of progressive, just so as to not scare her off too much at first. I really like a lot of melody in my progressive rock, and that is probably reflected by my choices. Fans of the genre should note this is more "old-school" in style...meaning this it is not the metallic progressive which seems to be in vogue these days. I have no problem with atonal jazziness or crunchy guitars in my prog as long is it serves as a break from the melody and not as a replacement for it.
I've got a few pieces of early Genesis with Gabriel on vox, and also some latter-day "neo-prog" bands influenced by Genesis, namely Marillion and IQ. I also included the 1999 re-recording of Carpet Crawlers in which Gabriel reunited with Genesis to breathe new life into an already great track, adding interesting textures and rhythms that have become a staple in his solo output. Also present is 70's Canterbury band Caravan whom I have become a big fan of over the past few months. I plan to put together a 2CD Caravan compilation as well, though choosing the tracklist will be very difficult as they have so many good tracks. They pretty much personify the term "pastoral progressive folk", not that that term gets bandied about all that much. Great stuff though.
As I said earlier, there are a couple tracks on here I would say are on the borderline of progressive...namely the Zebra tune, the Utopia track, and probably the Art in America one as well. Okay and maybe the Gowan stuff isn't super progressive, but there are some great melodies here and hey, this is my compilation and I think it all sounds pretty good. :)
Cheers!

Feedback:
I'm not a big prog rock fan, but this looks like a really well executed disc. Excellent cover photo - especially ties in well with the music.
I'm planning to tinker with the tracklist on this a bit as initial feedback from the reipient is that the Gowan stuff is a bit "light". Would have to agree on that one, so will probably loose two of the Gowan tracks to be replaced by...
......Ole Lukkoye and Mooseheart Faith Stellar Groove Band.., or Porcupine Tree..., or Steve Hillage...Group 1850...or-put a whammy on it and go Gong.
Just stumbled across this and having always been a fan of prog, I just had to comment on this. Some excellent choices here and I think it's cool that you added the updated Carpet Crawlers which I thought was quite good. (By the way, I think that Gowan IS prog even though everyone else seems to disagree.)
