Comment:
Here's my little tribute to Mr. Zevon. I've always been a fan, but for reasons I cannot entirely explain, I have found listening to his music this summer has given me some strength during the final stage of my own dad's battle with lung cancer, which ended three weeks ago. In fact, I wrote the eulogy that I delivered at Dad's funeral while listening to WZ. So this CD (which is hardly definitive, it's simply a bunch of his songs that I really like) is my way of thanking Warren Zevon for his music. It has meant a lot to me this summer. The title is from a comment Zevon made on David Letterman's show last October.Feedback:
Great mix, Rich. Funny...I thought of you as I wrote about Zevon today in my blog. As you can read there, I am newcomer to Zevon but as I wrote I thought "I'll bet Rich is a Zevon fan".
Very nice. He put out some wonderful music. That Letterman show was something to see too.
Rich - I was going to use the same title for a Zevon mix I put together today. I think I'll retool it a bit and find another title. Listening to Warren got me through a big chunk of my youth, and his passing resonates much deeper than I thought. My sympathies on the loss of your father. This is a wonderful mix! Particularly commendable for veering off the path worn down through most of WZ's songbook!
Shortly after the Letterman appearance I made a disc called "Enjoy Every Sandwich" - but iwas just a mix disc with just one WZ song (Boom Boom Mancini I think). Shortly afterwards, I wished I saved the title for a Zevon best of. I'm glad someone used it that way. It's a great quote that means everything and nothing at the same time, which I think fits Warren. Great mix - I think these are almost all the same songs I'd pick. The only two personal faves for me are "Roland" and "Even A Dog Can Shake Hands." And as I'm about to hit the submit button I suddenly remember "Poor Pitful Me" and "Leave Monkey Alone", which makes me realize even more that he had a shitload of great songs!
Great stuff. Love seeing all the "Excitable Boy" tracks - side 1 of that lp is one of the best album sides in the 70s.
An excellently well-crafted set of WZ. I myself wouldn't be able to leave out Poor Poor Pitiful Me, but other than that I'd judge this an ideal sampler to introduce someone to Zevon.
"Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money..!" Beautiful and bittersweet.., he'll be missed more than we think...his was a voice we don't have enough of anymore. Like an odd friend you enjoy when you're around-, you just don't get around 'em as much as you should; they pop ya' outta' the groove your needle's stuck in.
I second Dale's comment on "Roland" and "Even a Dog." I think "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" is on my top five best songs ever written.
