Comment:
I didn't take any music classes when I attended the University of Illinois in the early 80s, but I learned a lot about music. I bought records at Record Service. I got a bass. And I heard the Vertebrats at Mabel's.
The Vertebrats played jangly punk pop. They weren't flashy, but they were energetic, and, boy, could they write tunes!
The Vertebrats are relatively well represented on AOTM. The track that appears most often is "Left In The Dark," which appeared on the seminal 1981 compilation "Battle Of The Garages." Apart from that track, they released only one single in the day, but two CDs of demos and live tracks have come out since. Both are currently in print for the first time in long while. (A double sawbuck will get you both at Parasol: "A Thousand Day Dream" and "Continuous Shows." Buy now!)
This mix combines songs from the two CDs and a cassette of a live show I taped off the radio way back when (tracks 3-4, 7, 12-15 & 22).
Feedback:
great, i was just reading a review of "a thousand day dream" and got really interested. is it a good buy ? I'm only familiar with Left in the dark
I'm Interested!
Very cool. Haven't heard, or thought about, the Vertebrats in years.
Great fucking job. I never got to see them live, but I was a fan from the Bomp comp (which also put the Embarrassment on my radar) and the "Jackies Gone" 7". It's way cool to see someone give them the "best of" treatment of such high quality that you have here. And that is my fave cover I've seen on AotM in a long time - hell, it's one of the best covers in a while even if I include commercial discs. When I furst stumbled upon AotM it was your discs that upped the stakes for me graphically and made me push harder to do better work. You fucking rock!
So cool to see this after learning about those discs earlier today. Been a fan of Left in the Dark since the Bomp LP also. Seeing this & Dale's Fallouts mix today might get me motivated on my Hypstrz/Mofos comp.
Okay Lennart, I think I need to trade you for this. Let me know if you're interested in anything that I've done...
Excellent. You're lucky, to have caught that show off the radio! I just transferred an entire La's show I taped off the radio, which no one else seems to have, so I know how cool that is.
Great stuff Mr. Saaf! Count me a Vertebrat'er, too! Hail Champaign-Urbana, a nexus for some great Midwestern gems. (So many of these small communities-and their music scenes get lambasted for being "stuck in ______", and yet what they're doing is refining a genre to it's logical conclusion, long after it's been layed down by the forerunners..a lot of bands I grew up with did it better than the ones who "started it all"..!) Illini..!
Excellent! Did the Hole (I think) cover of "left in the dark" ever come out? Gotta track these down now. Are the rest of the tunes as great as the famous one?
Dear Fans of Art of the Mix and of my former band:
Would love to hear from any of you. Questions and requests for stories welcome. We are contemplating reunion gigs. Probably Chicago.
Peace.

I stumbled across this mix a few weeks ago. The Vertebrats were unknown to me ( being British & not quite 30 I can be forgiven right? ). Anyhow, you sold me. I went straight to Amazon, purchased the album 'A Thousand Day dream' for just 7 English pounds. Came 2 days ago and I've listened 3 or 4 times. It's excellent. Thankyou, Saaf for inadvertently introducing them to me.
Folks - VBs are playing a 30 yr reunion: October 2nd and 3rd - two shows in Champaign - Cowboy Monkey
