Comment:
Usually I spend my Saturday afternoons playing around with music, making mixes and whatnot. I tried to do that this Saturday, but I was in a lousy mood because my team had lost their football game, and both of the mixes I was making were downers. So I said, "fuck it, I'm making a mix that puts me in a good mood." Hence, the collected works of Holland/Dozier/Holland songwriting team. Sure there aren't many (okay, any) obscure picks, but they were like a machine that only wrote hits, what could I do? Granted, this stuff doesn't have the resonance of Dylan, or anything, but it makes me smile, and it beats the hell out of what they classify as "hits" these days. For what it's worth, they released a record of their own, and I hear it's rather good, but I have yet to track it down. So if you know anything about that, I'd like to hear more...Feedback:
Great mix and nice tribute to these amazing songwriters. So many super tunes.
exactly what sean said, "So many super tunes".
roger. don't get no betta.
Winners one and all, Adam. Who are your football team incidentally?
I should have said American football, Gerry, and it's the University of Minnesota. Incidentally, speaking of "real football", this summer I stayed in the same hotel as the Celtic team, and their fans. Seemed to be nice guys. Everyone in the hotel was wearing a green shirt though.
Well, well. Celtic are my very favourite team. I've been a major fan since I was seven years old. It's a small world, indeed! Good luck to Minnesota for the rest of the season. I'm afraid my knowledge of American Football is very limited.
Fantastic stuff. I love the Supremes. Why does this not have the resonance of Dylan, though? It's equally valid. And speaking of 'Britney/Timberlake crap'- who are the Neptunes if they're not the modern HDH? Just a thought.
Fair point, bear. I didn't phrase that particularly well. People like Dylan (or Billy Bragg or, to stay with the soul theme, later-period Marvin Gaye) have lyrics that make me think...their best songs challenge me in a way. These ones don't really change the way I live my life, but they do have every bit as much emotional resonance. That was a poor choice of words; I certainly didn't intend to sell HDH short. As Sean and Peter said, their songwriting ability is/was mind-boggling.
Those guys were great.
Okay, I get what you mean now Adam. Fair enough, too.
A brilliant set of tracks highlighting the genius trio of the 60s and beyond..! Light from a thousand suns in those heads.., and a staggering body of work to prove it. Good one Adam...
Oh yes, lovely stuff. One of those mixes where you can sing every song** as you read down the list.** Quietly. Inside your head.
Great. I want this when we get around to trading.
Fantastic. Exactly what Muzag said.
