For this mix, I took inspiration from the way the basslines link the songs of Marvin Gaye's 'Whats Going On' and let the bass lead from one song to the next. This is most clearly seen in the Preston Love/Portishead link. Those songs, recorded 30 years apart, sound like they were made to be linked together on a mixtape. Its really quite amazing. I had to edit the middle part of 'Crockers and Killers' where Bowden gets a little crazy with his time-changes and free-jazz noodlings. If there is one thing wrong with his music, it is his tendency to be a bit self-indulgent. I saved the best parts for you, though. Side-B's cyclical theme is continued with the Fela cover. I can heartily recommend that 'Red Hot & Riot' CD to all Fela fans with open ears.
