Comment:

My co-workers and I do mix competitions. We sully the art by wagering on this competition. Despite that, it's fun and, every so often, I hear something that really surprises me. Usually there's a theme or some kind of restriction. This time, it was wide open. So be it.

There was more that I wanted to do with this mix (isn't there always), but I really like the flow, so I won't fuck with it too much. If I were doing it over, I might toss a Specials track on here to lead into the Ted Leo song. Since this comp is very heavy on songs from 2003 (too much so to be coincidental, yet not enough to be a comp limited to 2003), I might swap out the Kid 606 song for something off Eno's Music For Airports. The only other Weakerthans song that was a contender for this comp was "One Great City," but I opted for poignance (and because "Virtue" is just an amazing song). Why "The Shadowlands" and not something off "Gold" or "Heartbreaker"? Show me a better song that Ryan Adams has recorded. The Clarence Carter track picks things up a bit in a soulful mode after Drake taps the brakes and leads nicely into Williams' languid vox. I'll be posting my EOY mix soonish. I need to get around to putting that together ...
