Comment:

You can't resist . . . the Watusi Twist!

It's hard to understand why the twist was such a huge worldwide dance craze, there's not much to it really.
I've read hints that Chubby Checker, the Twist's official mascot, had mob backing,
& that might explain why his version was the monster hit, rather than Hank Ballard's original.

Or maybe it was just one of those media-frenzy feeding on itself kind of things . . .
whatever, for a while there in the early 60's everybody was doing it . . . even, as you can see here,
Frank Sinatra, who may have hated himself the morning after caving in & doing "Everybody's Twisting".
Robert Parker must have thought he'd got himself a double word score by putting out a song combining
the two hot topics of 1961, the space program & the Twist, with "Twisting Out in Space".

This mix tries to be purely tunes about the dance itself,
not just a grab bag of songs with "Twist" in the title.
So I couldn't include Roy Milton's brilliant instrumental "T-Town Twist",
even though you could easily twist to it, because it's from 1951, way before the Peppermint Lounge thing.
But I may have got some of these wrong --
I don't know if "Twist & Shout" is a song that people actually twisted to?
It was 1962, so I'm assuming they did.

Credit where credit is due: this mix would not have been possible without the magic of AOTM cross-fertilization,
& I owe thanks to Thomas Mohr for the
German Chubby Checker track,
from his
1000 Nadelstiche ;
to Sean Lally,
for several cuts from
his
Sleaze-a-riffic mix;
thanks also to brad32's

Rock The Joint ;
& of course fwak's ever-fabulous

Universe of 1000 Dances! -- (And if there's anyone else out there w/ some other twist tunes to trade, please let me know!

Anyway, here's what it's all comes down to:
Take your baby out on the dancin' floor . . .
& wiggle wiggle 'til your hips get sore!

Twistacular! A very fine mix indeed. I just watched Twist again a few weeks ago, so the whole scene is fresh in my mind and this just toally captures the whole ball of wax - and then some! I love how a craze could get so damned out of hand so fast. I was going to suggest "Bedrock Twist" from the Flinstones, but I just looked at the CD and it's Twitch, not twist (doh!). Again, wonderful job on a mix that is so obviously a labor of love.

Yeah, I always wondered about the Hank and Chubby thing, especially since the 2 versions barely differ, but Hank has the (slightly)better voice. Ah, the vagaries of public taste. Great mix.

You fiend! You've beaten me to the punch yet again!! Well, I might just have a couple dozen other twist tracks for a twistin' sequel. Now this is a boss idea and a boss collection - you're the boss, man! Somewhere out there, and I heard this on Zombo's show, there's an entire album side twist song - like a 20 minute twist contest. He had some kooky twist contest on air and challenged his listeners to send in a video of themselves twisting for 20 minutes. And yes, there were several entries. Now howsa bout a Hank Ballard mix?

How does Chubby Checker & The Fat Boys' 1987 version of 'The Twist' fit into it, tho? Very excellent stuff here.

Okay, I've seen the documentary Twist http://www.dvdjournal.com/quickreviews/t/twist.q.shtml
and one of the reasons this particular dance was so popular is because it was the first time couples danced without physical contact. More than you wanted to know? Then, LET'S DANCE!

Just to repeat what everyone else said: very nicely done. Would that be Kim Novak and Robert Conrad on the cover ?

Beautiful, I think the fact that there wasn't much to it it what really made this dance popular, I mean, everyone, literaly,(except maybe Johnny Ek , the human torso) could do it, and , like Gerry mentioned, I little alchohol just make it that much easier. It's really the only dance I can do without messing it up completely. I love the little jump that Joey Dee adds to his routine. You can see it in the Twist Documentary...and a 1,2,3 kick,1,2,3,jump.
