Comment:
My wife said to me recently, "You know, if you want to make me a mix CD to try to convince me that Rush doesn't suck, I'll give them another try." And thus this mix, an attempt to squeeze on the best Rush songs with the least dippy lyrics and no Geddy Lee falsetto, which she can't stand. (So, you know, no "Circumstances".)Feedback:
Funny description. My love for Rush has accumulated caveats over time, as I realize how adolescent a lot of the lyrics are. Those guys read way too much Ayn Rand and smoked way too much pot. But they still rule....I think "YYZ" is a great way to introduce Rush because you get a real sense for what top-notch musicians they all are. The guitar solo in "Kid Gloves" is 20 seconds of pure electricity that I used to play over and over again and get goose bumps. "Entre Nous" is pretty. "Limelight" has some of their best lyrics. "Analog Kid" has the most moving chorus of any Rush song. "Time Stand Still" is pretty. I am not a big fan of "Spirit of Radio" -- the part where he goes "concert hall!" and the crowd cheers is just way too cheesy, as is the reggae part. I also think "Witch Hunt" veers into Spinal Tap-ish territory. If you make a part 2, I recommend you include "Broon's Bane" and "La Villa Strangiato." "Lakeside Park," while not a great song, is very pretty. "Subdivisions" is killer....
Oh the things we'll do when we're still newlyweds. Can't say as much as fellow San Diegan doohickamajigger, but I hope your wife enjoys this and the marriage continues to blossom. Better make a High Llamas mix as a backup ;)
Yeah, I was going to include "Subdivisions" as track 2, but "New World Man" flowed better after "Limelight". I agree that the cheering crowd after "concert hall!" is a bit much, but I still love that song. Another song I was thinking of including was "Chain Lightning", but I was going to delete the idiotic "That's nice" at the end. I ran out of time for "La Villa Strangiato", although perhaps I should have made time, and then there would have been fewer lyrics. (^_^)
No amount of mix CDs could convince my wife of the glory of Rush. We just agree to disagree. To be honest, I'm not an enormous fan myself, but I'm a male who went to high school in the '80s, so, yeah, I do kinda like 'em.
Having gone to high school in the '80s is key.
