THOMAS DOLBY - "Puppet Theatre: Rarities"
Comment:
I've been wanting to post some sort of Dolby mix on this site for ages. For those who are wondering why on earth anyone would want to do that, I'd like to state for the record that this guy is a *criminally* underrated songwriter and, furthermore, I'm willing to defend that notion to the death. If you think he's nothing more than a cheesy '80s "one hit wonder," I highly recommend picking up any of his four excellent studio albums (bar possibly "Aliens Ate My Buick"). This compilation is one I made for a fellow Dolby fan. He's got all the albums, I've given him a copy of "12x12 Original Remixes" and he'll be getting a CD of "Live Wireless" straight from laserdisc. This collection fills in some of the gaps with a bevy of rarities, many from vinyl. (Sadly, both "The Jungle Line" and "Don't Turn Away" had to be cut for time.) Tracks 10-16 are culled from the limited edition live album "Forty," recorded to commemorate the man's 40th birthday.
Feedback:
No shame, or embarrassment, in being a fan of Thomas Dolby. At all. I don't listen to him as often as I'd used to, but that stems from turntable problems as much as anything...good stuff Vinz. Hail Dolby!
I second that emotion . . . er, notion. ;)
I don't know his stuff after the second lp. But that first one (the original version sans "Blinded Me w/ Science") is a classic.
I own three different versions of "The Golden Age Of Wireless," and while purists might point to the original as the best, I'm sticking with the second U.S. LP...the one that has the extended "Science" at the beginning and the guitar version of "Radio Silence." It's the first version of the LP I heard and still works for me.
pretty good mix of rarer tracks -- would be great if it included the fantastic Pedestrian Walkway' & 'Ghost Train' tracks.
Trevor, do you have those tracks? I need them.
