Comment:
1. Spanish flamenco2,3. A Barcelona-based group who add turntablism, sampling, rap and electronics to traditional flamenco
4. Fado singer from Portugal
5,6,7. Paris Combo is from (naturally) Paris whereas Pink Martini is from Portland, Oregon. Their "Never On Sunday" avoids the usual bouzouki-crazed cliches for a slower, melancholy version. "Sympathique" is based on a poem by Guillaume Apollinaire
13. Matmos does a crazy and delightful deconstruction of the Sousa march
14. This track was recorded in 1954 in an actual New Orleans funeral march
15. Charles Ives jumbles together a number of patriotic songs as only Charles Ives can do (and sings too!)
16. Master turntablist Marclay deconstructs Louis Armstrong using a vintage wind-up Victrola and a 78 rpm recording of Armstrong
17. This one will make you laugh (or at least smile)
18. Very early Sun Ra (c. 1954) in a slightly demented arrangement of the Broadway song
Feedback:
cheers for the paris combo!
This is sweet!
Wonderfully eclectic idea, Dirk; interesting selections.
Kewl wanderings and wonderings.
Brilliant.
I echo-o-o-o the previous three commenters....good work here.
all over the place ... and back again! Lots on here I'd like to hear, most especially Sun Ra . . .
