31. No Time 32. What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round? 33. For Pete's Sake. I first became a Monkee Maniac at age 4, I watched the show religiously (although it was already in syndication by the early 70s). Peter was my favorite then and he was my favorite 14 years later when I relived my childhood by watching every episode on a local TV station every morning at 7:30. I obsessively collected the albums on Colgems in both mono and stereo, and saw them perform live three times. I slowly drove my sister insane as a teenager, because I would play the Monkees first thing in the morning pretty much every day for a while. She claims she knows the bass line to every song because she could hear the songs through our common wall. Oddly enough, I made this mix at her request, another little birthday gift (and she says she's listened to it every day since I gave it to her). This mix captures the early stuff, mostly from 1965-1966, very heavy on Davy and Mickey, since they were both featured pretty heavily on the first two albums. This is the stuff I couldn't get enough of as a kid. As a teenager I actually preferred the later stuff, which I have compiled onto another mix. So who was your favorite Monkee?
Feedback:
Ah, I love the Monkees. Mike was always (and still is) my favourite.
great stuff, Deanna. This is at least as good as any shop-bought compilation I've seen.
Nice. I love the Monkees, too.
I love 'em, too. Great mix. I look forward to the rest of it. Btw, did you see my nod to you (Monkees-wise) on my "Eating her fingers like they're just another meal" mix? ;-)
J'aime Les Singe, no 'Alternate Title though? Mind you I only say that cos I included it on a mix the other day!
I, too, am of the generation that rates the Monkees very highly. Although Davy's songs had a tendency to make me skip forward every now and then, I'm a big fan of Mickey & Peter -- but Mike Nesmith is still tops! Great job!
Kewl! Fave Monkee? As a kid, probably Mickey. Nowadays, Mike. Anyone but Davy, I suppose - I'm not anti-Davy, exactly. He's just the most disposable. See, even in the 60s, a pre-fab group had remarkable hits - oh, how low music has sunk since then.
Fantastic. I'm with James on Nesmith.
great stuff
Mas fina Madame d'Insect! Hmm, as a kid it was Peter, but Mike was always the one who I secretly leaned to and admired for various reasons..suppose I still do, for those same reasons. Quisp or Quake?
The funny thing is, Mike is my fave Monkee from a musical standpoint. I rented the entire first season a few months ago and really appreciated not only his musicianship, but his wry sense of humor...and I agree, Davy is definitely the disposable one. The next volume is heavy on the Mike, and very light on the Davy!
Terrific! I have my own mix (never posted) that is similar. In the sixties Micky was my man but as time goes by my respect for Mike has grown.
Oh, and not to worry Cliff, "Alternate Title" is on volume two.
I can't believe I saw the Monkees in concert (without Nesmith) as a reunion act in 1975!! I always liked SHE myself. That was on a good album. Nice mix.
Good stuff! Mike, I think..cos of the hat and I reguarly used Tippex!
Love the Monkees; I love this mix. I'm a MIKE girl all the way!!
Fabulous mix, even if it's missing my all-time favorite Monkees song, the Porpoise Song. Davy has always been ny favorite - he had the best shot at nailing Marcia Brady.
Oh, I forgot to vote: Mike Nesmith is my favorite Monkee (by far).
You know, they really recorded some great pop tunes. Some of them are a little too heavy on the corn syrup for my taste, but all in all a great catalogue. My favorite Monkee .... Steve Stills. Oh wait, he didn't make the cut. I guess I'd have to say Mike.
WOW. I myself have been afraid to ever listen to these again but know I've been tempted so many times I will have to break down one day. In the 7th grade I wore the Nesmith hat, all the time and found, since he was so ironic with his humor and wrote his own songs, he was too my favorite. Will have to trade (if you'd like) for the double....Nice!!
Ahh, back to the days before the man figured out that you actually didn't need to apply any talent to cause a teen sensation. Can't deny the greatness of Pleasant Valley Sunday or Stepping Stone. Always dug Mickey the most, at least until I saw him as a guest on Politically Incorrect. I guess I'll identify myself as a Mike fan now.
Let's Dance On ... what an underrated tune. I really like this whole thing. Good work.
This is fantastic! Another vote for Mike here, although Peter was my favourite when I was a kid.
My favorite Monkee was Jackie, their original bass player...
b/t/w - nice collection.
