Comment:
Ten years before Disco there was DiscothFque. In the aftermath of the Twist craze, a number of fad dances were spawned: the Monkey, the Hully Gully, the Swim, the Dog, the Frug, and on and on. The instrumental DiscothFque sound provided the soundtrack to the bars and dance clubs where hip white folks shook their tail feathers. The music itself exists in a purgatory between cool and square. Enoch Light and Lester Lanin performed the more sophisticated tunes, but I prefer the budget LPs with uncredited musicians, which have a rawer sound. These feature saxophone honkers, piano boogie woogies, guitar twangers, and the odd beat vocal thrown in for good measure.
Typical liner notes from the time:
From France comes the newest of crazes to cross the Atlantic Ocean since the exciting visit of the Beatles-the DISCOTHEQUE.
Almost overnight, clubs have sprung up all over the country. The Discotheque club is the spot for dancers. The club features a continuous flow of music in the most popular dance tempos: THE MONKEY, THE FISH, THE FRUG, THE JERK, THE WATUSI, THE HULLY GULLY, THE WALK, THE SWIM, and THE DOG. Also featured is music to which you can dance almost anything.
Any location is suitable for a Discotheque. Whether you use your basement playroom or take over an abandoned railroad station, the bottom of a mine or the top of a mountain, if you get music to the spot and have room for the happy dancing couples, you are ready for today's rage, the Discotheque.
In this album, we feature one of America's top groups playing for your dancing pleasure-GO! GO! DISCOTHEQUE!

Gulp...Wow. Meet me at the bottom of the mine. Fantastic Mr. Saaf.
Phew, dood. This looks . . . well . . . essential?! In other words: Muss ich haben. Hast du vielleicht Lust auf another trade? Jus' lemme know . . .
Awesome job! That version of Greensleeves epitomizes the phrase "saxophone honker."
wonderful, I've downloaded all of it, will spin it later this evening
Wow! Demonstrates a level of obsession that can only be applauded!

Excellent all the way!!
Wow! Uncredited must be a great band, since they represent half of this mix. I'm surprised I've never heard of them. But seriously folks, this looks excellent. I'll have to put my 56K modem to work and download a few of these gems. Groovy cover too. You're firing on all cylinders.
Mmmmm, looks (reads) as non-stop floor action Lennart! (Ooh, and the cover...what a perfect frozen moment!)
Mmm, mmmm. Downloaded the songs, uploaded to my iPod and started shaking! I think I may have dislocated a tail feather though...
Lookin' mighty fine - I need to find me an abandoned railroad station - and some space to download these max trax...
Wow - this looks seriously cool. thanks for the download link too - am very prepared to start shaking a la Curtis!
