JOHN LINNELL - "The Best of John Linnell, A to Z"
Comment:
Hoo boy, have I been on quite a TMBG kick lately. This is something I've been considering doing for a while now...a comp of just John Linnell stuff, including solo work. I plan on making a companion volume for John Flansburgh/Hello The Band/Mono Puff stuff as well. In the olden days, Flans was my favorite, probably because he was the most friendly and cheerful. After a while I realized, about 80% of my favorite TMBG songs were Linnell's. Hey, he might be a little nutty and reclusive, but those traits usually result in prodigious creativity. Flans might be the wit and spirit of the band, but Linnell is the brains and soul. I arranged this chronologically mainly because I'm too lazy to work out a running order right now, and also because the randomness might result in something interesting. There were *many* regrettable omisions here...too numerous to mention. ("Till My Head Falls Off," "Hovering Sombrero," "We Want A Rock," "Mrs. Train" and some of the solo stuff particularly hurt.) Thanks to threside's "Hopeless Bleak Depair" compilation for inspiration: http://www.artofthemix.org/FindAMix/Getcontents.asp?strMixId=49033
Feedback:
hehehe, that was great...i actually just saw tmbg last night.
Nice. Doing a disc for each John is a project I've been kicking around for awhile, possibly once I finish my 8-disc TMBG rarities compilation. Lot's of great tracks here, though a couple of strange choices as well (Exquisite Dead Guy? Really?)
Yes, I love that song. I'm also working on a disc for Flans, which is much more difficult than I had anticipated.
