Comment:
Inspired by the excellent John Dower documentary on the four odd years of 'Cool Britannia' and 'Britpop' the anthemic music that offered the youth of Britain a method of protest against the Tory government and said that it was okay to be British. This was inspired by my (English) girlfriend who loves most of these songs. They aren't in any chronological order except the last two; 'Song 2' and 'Stand By Me' represent 1997, and features Blur and Oasis, the two bands most clearly identified with Britpop and it's disappearance; Blur simply walked away (doing the American indie thing) while Noel Gallagher's songwriting talents sadly declined during the 'Be Here Now' period- turning many fans away with bloated 8 minute ballads. Anyway, it was a great time for music, and I may put together a prequel and sequel to this list providing people are kind.Feedback:
hey you know about the official live forever compilation? i got it a few months ago and it's pretty good, but i didn't think it was much betetr than my fresh hits 96 double casette i got in, well, 96. and i got it almost purely for sleeper's sale of the century. wasn't on the official live forever cd but it's on yours :oD :oD which makes it better. + menswe@r who everyone loves and i've never heard. dunno about Song 2, i'd probably swap it for oh yeah by ash.
Loved the movie, love the mix. I really dig how you have the Oasis & Blur songs back to back since the discussion about that rivalry was my favorite part of the doc (especially Damon's smug reactions). The only band I'm surprised to see left off of this collection is Massive Attack, since three of their albums get mentioned...although given everything they probably don't fit as well as all the others. Some fine choices, in a nifty track order, of a fantastic time in recent music history. Cheers! -Famous.
Where as I haven't seen the documentary, but would love to look it up (rock-docs are sveet!!), I find this mix to be extremely solid!! I also enjoy seeing other people post Kula Shaker and Ocean Colour Scene, even though I have shy'd away from them in recent times. Very nice!
