Comment:
To me, punk and post punk are the immediate parents of Britpop- punk is the 'daddy' giving Britpop it's sneering attitude, its swagger- and besides, listen to Wire or the Stranglers and tell me you don't hear Elastica. Or notice that Paul Weller of The Jam plays lead guitar on Oasis's instrumental 'Swamp Song.' Or compare the Buzzcocks to Ash. The list goes on and on.Post-punk meanwhile was Britpop's mommy, giving it some melodic beat, catchy hooks and was perhaps the most immediate influence on the shining lights of the movement, Blur and Oasis. Both Damon and Noel decided they wanted to be in a band after seeing the Smiths, and one can't help but compare the Mondays' drug-addled lead singer/hooligan Shaun Ryder with Liam Gallagher. Meanwhile, Blur's smart poppy music from the early '90s wouldn't sound out-of-place on an XTC record
Notice I have avoided The Kinks, Beatles, Small Faces, etc. as well as Massive Attack, Portishead and Primal Scream; they are part of future planned mixes that I hope to get around to soon.
