THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS - "Mink Car" (Alternate Version)
Comment:
"Mink Car" didn't work for a lot of people, myself included. First off, I'd heard a lot of the songs before...in superior versions. Another part of it was that the wide array of producers just didn't make for a cohesive album. (Might have made for a couple of nice EPs, but not an entire album.) The other reason probably had to do with it having the worst release date in U.S. history (9-11-01). After hearing TMBG's much more cohesive recent release "The Spine," I thought I'd throw together an "alternate version" of "Mink Car," just to see what would happen. The results were interesting. This version has much more of a rock vibe to it, and subsequently feels much more like a TMBG album. With the inclusion of the live tracks, it almost feels like a sequel to "Severe Tire Damage." (I would have used all studio versions, if they'd been available.) As a result, I had to crossfade some of the tracks in EZ CD Creator (tracks 3--->4, for instance), but the effect worked perfectly. One interesting discovery I made while doing this was that the songs that had been the most tampered with in the studio bookended the album ("Bangs," "Cyclops Rock," "Man, It's So Loud In Here," "I've Got A Fang," "Older," "Finished With Lies"), while the songs in the middle of the album were all pretty minimalistic when it comes to production. Anyhow, this version works pretty well, as far as I'm concerned. Versions are the regular album versions, unless otherwise noted. I've always greatly preferred the early version of "Bangs" in particular over the album version. Oh, and this version of "Edith Head" is a fan made mix that melds the "Long Tall Weekend" version (high octave vocal) with the "Mink Car" version (low octave vocal). The cover is an actual unused idea for the cover of the official album.
Feedback:
Very groovy idea. Ben Folds' "Rocking the Suburbs" was also released on doomsday, by the way.
Very nice re-working of a much-malinged album.
Eels' "Souljacker" and *shudder* Mariah Carey's "Glitter" were also released on 9-11.
As a big TMBG fan, I thought Mink Car was their worst effort. This is truly a great idea and a fine job!
Mink Car certainly suffered from them having much too long too tamper with the songs. I thought Finished with Lies and Edith Head were particularly damaged. Always dug the newer version of Bangs, though. It's so Loud works in both versions, but all versions of Older are trumped by the rarely heard recording from the Factory Showroom sessions. Working Undercover also started out a bit more rockin' live, IIRC.
Heh, I don't know why I didn't notice this until now: J-Spot, that "rarely heard recording" you're referring to is readily available on the Rhino "Dial-A-Song" compilation and is also the one used here...unless you're referring to yet *another* version I'm not aware of.
