Comment:

Well, I did it. Months of preparation, and a somewhat chaotic hour or so of oral exam hell, but I survived it! My "cohort" and I, four of us, have spent the past several months cramming insect-vectored plant and animal diseases, economic threshold charts, biogeography of insect distributions, taxonomic rules, physiological explanations of how an insect eats, grows, flies, smells, etc. and boy was I glad to just get it out of my brain!!!

I arrived on time, was allowed to choose the first topic (there were four professors, one for each topic). I picked the one I thought would be the easiest for me, Insect Physiology. Well, the professor was all over the map, he would interrupt an explanation and start me on something completely different...very frustrating. I managed to get through his section, his responses to my answers were things like.."good enough, let's move on" or "that's not really important...let's move on". I was relieved when we moved to the next topic. It was during the second topic (pest control) that the miracles started. I was amazed when the professor for pest control started asking me easy quesions. I was starting to think I actually had it made when he finally asked me something I just didn't know how to answer. That's when the noises started. Somewhere upstairs someone was doing something that sounded like jackhammering. We all laughed it off, made comments about what a noisy building it was, and when we got back on topic, the professor chose to move on due to time constraints (so I dodged a bullet!). Next topic- Systematics and Speciation (my specialty), once again, I'm answering the questions, surprised that I seem to know the majority of the things being asked, when I get asked a real toughie. My mind goes blank, I get worried...the fire alarm bell goes offf. We evacuate the building, find a shady spot on the lawn, and I ask the professor to repeat the question. She can't remember what it was. We move on. I finish her section and finally get to the last topic (still sitting on the lawn outside the building)-- Medical Entomology. I start talking about insect vector-borne diseases and different modes of transmission...and a brigade of men on powermowers comes out of nowhere and start idling loudly behind us. I try yelling my answers over the sound of the mowers, and finally they leave. I answer the last question, something about insect behavior. I forget one of the answers, I'm told what I said was "good enough". I'm asked to walk away so they can deliberate in private (this usually occurs in the room while we wait in the hallway). I walk to the building. By the time I get there they've decided. When they reach me, they hand me the little piece of official paper that says I passed and congratulate me. I'm too wired from adrenaline to relax, so I go to work and call everyone to let them know. This is how I've chosen to let all my AotM friends know, appropriately, with a double mix. This is meant to be like a huge mix tape, each side with it's own sub theme and with a separate title. I'll be listening to this all weekend! Whew.

Celebration! A smashing success in entomology, a smashing success in mix-making. Maybe you should have a few fire alarms & lawnmower noises sprinkled in there? No, this is just brilliant - not every mix tells a story, but this one sure does. Congrats!

Congrats on getting to the other side of your exams! I'm sure that all of us would have started with the no-brainer Insect Physiology topic. Kids play.Great title song choice from the YFF (it's still their first record that I love most by a longshot). Really nice mix on it's own two legs (or six for the anthropod AotMers), but it's even better when you see that it captures the whole spectrum of you experience (I think the Animals cut was the one that made me laugh). Congrats again on your acedemics and on making one hell of a mix. -Dale

Ha! Ha! Congrats Deanna! That's a great story, maybe even worthy of it's own Luis Buneal directed film. Needless to say, boss mixes also. Now, I've been wanting for the longest time to ask you about the evolution of insects...

Jim, don't even go there! I had to try to memorize the evolution of insects (as well as anyone knows it) for the exam too. Luckily we just didn't have enough time to go too deeply into any one topic!

Not yet, I've just jumped the first hurdle towards becoming Dr. buglady. I still have to pass the qualifying exam next year which will be 3 hours long! Imagine the mix for that one, it'll have to be 6 CDs!

Madame Buglady a well deserved 'FTlicitations' great news & though of course I don't know you hearing your news was still a great way to start my w/e. Could do with your assistance out here in France to give the woodwork in a 200 year old farmhouse I'm about to buy the once over for undesirable wood chomping miscreants! Great story & fabulous mix, I can't get enough of The Mooney Suzuki at the mo.

wonderful story and wonderful mix. I love the flow of tracks - esp disc one. I still reckon that the first 3 tracks from 'off the bone' are about the best 3 opening tracks ever from a CD ( . . . . but then I guess there's the first 3 tracks from Give 'em enough rope). Whatever, excellent mix.

This is one fantastic double dose of thunder, accompanied by a great story. So I see you didn't use my hissing cockroach advice, but hiring someone to pull the fire alarm during a key moment in your oral exam was a stroke of genius! Congratulations!
