Comment:

Every time you think back about all of the great music that you grew up listening to in the 70's and 80's one also has to consider the absolute load of crap that was foisted upon our precious ear drums, too. These songs are all completely cringeworthy. Try not to if you put together and listen to this mix. However, if you know these songs, you secretly (or maybe not so secretly) enjoy or even love them because they are memorable. Things haven't changed that much since the 80's as far as bad music. There's still alot of it, but it doesn't stay with the memory. I cringe during each of the songs in this group......while I'm singing along and laughing, of course.

Sadly, I am a fan of these songs. Copacabana is a song that never ceases to make me smile and make me sing at the top of my lungs as though I was Lola with a yellow feather in my hair.

Mission accomplished with this mix I'd say. That Soft Cell track always makes me thing there's budgerigars screetching throughout! & as for the Styx track we'll say no more!

Ditto F.C. except I always like the Soft Cell tune.

I have a soft spot for Copacabana. I can't explain it. 9,17, and 18 are classics, overplayed classics maybe, classic nonetheless. Other than that, right on! I feel like killing myself if I have to hear even a second of total eclipse of the heart. What a god awful song. Beach boy's kokomo would have made it on my version of this mix. haha I loved that song as a kid.

I'm interested in what people think were obvious omissions (thx for the kokomo suggestion, chunky). For example, I almost included "Me and you and a dog named boo" by Lobo. Abysmal but unforgettable fluff.

Leave Tainted Love alone!

I think it's a peculiar side effect of societal peer pressure or mob rule or classifying things as "cool" vs. "uncool" that most of the time, when people discuss what songs they think are truly bad, they single out the ones that are considered "lame" by modern standards, the ones that are so unironically silly or naive or unpretentious or something along those lines that it's like shooting a baby. According to anyone who would support this list, these are songs that were overplayed to the point of annoyance and have a "cheesy" datedness in hindsight, and are for the most part disposable compared to, I don't know, deep, emotional indie music or whatever. I'd like to see a list of Worst Songs that attacks, say, Radiohead or Elvis, respected things that might actually inspire genuine argument. Here, when you include Bonnie Tyler, it's the person who tries to defend her music as being enjoyable that's going to be labeled the homo, the lame-ass who has no genuine appreciation for music. But if you claim that a freakin' Belle & Sebastian song is crap, you're gonna get 3,000 "cool" hipsters calling you a tasteless moron. 'Sup with that? I don't intend to debase your mix by saying these things, Teefus - on the contrary, as I said under my mix, I do so delight in seeing these kinds of extreme lists, and sure enough, I'm a fan of many a track here (that "Sesame Street"ish Carpenters song is actually on my top 500, and Taco? Starland Vocal Band? Soft Cell? Men W/Out Hats? Bonnie Tyler? Kick. Ass.)...I'm just making an observation. I like your mix, even though it's mislabeled..."Really Fun Songs" would be a more appropriate heading ;)

Although I will admit to hating "Copacabana", the Osmonds, Captain & Tennille, "Mr. Roboto", and "Disco Duck", not because they're easy targets but because I find their irritating and stupid. Which is probably everyone else's argument against all the songs on here I said I liked, but still, you gotta admit these are all too obvious. Hate something new, man! Have unique taste! I know that you do, but this mix doesn't really represent it at all. Oh, and to prove that I'm not just a follower who's lashing out against lame music like "Disco Duck" because it's trendy to do so, I will reluctantly yet honestly admit that I still like listening to the "Macarena". NOT dancing to it. There is a huge difference there. But I do like the song. There. I think my "real"ness in this matter should be cemented forever based on that

Ah, but when you put together a top "whatever" list, it often goes with the territory that there will be familiar material. When did familiar all of a sudden become anathema? Since when did the more-obscure-the music-the-cooler-it-is formula become the arbiter of, uh, coolness? I will admit to being obvious at times, but I refuse to be obscure just for the sake of ignoring that which is obvious.

No, man, I didn't mean it that way. I'm not suggesting you hate, like, "Unknown Yet Hip Indie Band's Song". I actually was hoping for something more familiar than that. What's "obvious" about your choices is that everyone else says they suck, so you're not really providing an insight that seems at all unique to YOU. It would "unique" as I said if you would have chosen, say, a classic Led Zeppelin song, or . If you had chosen a few songs that maybe 100% of the world didn't already hate, so that it would be a fresher-looking list. As it stands, most of these songs have probably already appeared on numerous "This Music Sucks" mixes for AOTM, and are widely detested, know what I mean? Now if you'd said that a Clash song or a Beatles song or just anything that's not already a universal joke was bad, that would have been more interesting. But again, I didn't mean to put you down. I was just making an observation. Sorry :( :)

I didn't take it as a put down. This forum exists for people to comment on other's mixes, be they good, bad, or indifferent. Where would the interest be if there wasn't difference of opinion. Additionally, this is not a mix of songs I hate. Bad does not necessarily equal hate. How many bad movies have you seen that are so awful you reluctantly admit to actually liking? Observe all you want. I welcome it. The more comments the better. Oh yeah, and I really mean it that I don't take offense, but if you have to say that you don't mean to put someone down, then you do.

Okay... When I was reading your list, I was smiling at the number of songs in there I enjoy. But as a child born in the mid-80s, it's cool to enjoy the "uncool" songs your parents had to suffer through! Lol. But the most obvious ommission here (but one that i LOVE) is "RASPUTIN" by Boney M... C'mon!! It's SO cheesy & wonderful all at the same time! How could you have missed that one?
