Comment:

In 1997, Scotland's esteemed Dr. Vibenstein began sending me mix cassettes of his favorite new (and sometimes old) musical discoveries...and life hasn't been the same since! This CD comprises my favorite material from the first three volumes of his ongoing series (the only three volumes I've received "digitally remastered" versions of thus far), arranged in the order in which they appeared on the various cassettes. I played those cassettes quite frequently in those days and so this disc brings back many fond collegiate memories for me. Ah, the joy of hearing "Bitter Sweet Symphony" (then virtually unknown in the U.S.) for the first time...only to hear it featured prominently in a Nike commercial a week later! GAH!

I owe Dr. V a great debt of gratitude for turning me on to many groups I probably would never have heard otherwise, for illuminating me on a few I was already familiar with and for just being a voice in the musical wilderness in general in the late '90s. (I blame solely him for my undying obsession with The Divine Comedy, for starters.) This Turkey Day, I'll be giving my thanks to Dr. V! (Errrrr...perhaps not.)

Be sure and check out the good doctor's mixes on this site, as well as his website: http://www.evibenstein.co.uk/carpark/index-b.html

I HATE HATE HATE HATE that Verve song. However, once we get over that hurdle, the rest of the mix looks great. I hope all is well is Gozerville.

Although I don't like the Verve I've always had a soft spot for that song. The rest of the mix looks pretty coool too.

funny! I've got a problem with the Verve too. Don't know why. Anyway, there's loads more on here to enjoy so I'm not going to get too hung up on them.

I deduce Rob doesn't like the Verve! Me can't stand Radiohead but the rest is great.

For the record, I can't stand Radiohead either, though I do like "No Surprises" quite a bit.

Is Gozer the town that Keyser Souze comes from? Cool mix, too.

Gozer is a traveler. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldronaii, the Traveller came as a large and moving Torb. Then in the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Sloar. Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day, I can tell you.
