Comment:

Like last year, I compiled some statistics for the mixes posted to AOTM during the past year. Then I hit the iTunes Music Store and downloaded a CD's worth of the most popular songs. (Two I couldn't find.) Looks like your typical college radio playlist, doesn't it? There's nothing that would embarrass the garden-variety hipster, I don't think. Thanks to my fellow mixers and the AOTM maintainers for a fab 2004.

Most interesting, of course, are the appearances of Drake and Buckley, who never quite got their due in life. Nice to see they're getting posthumous recognition.

Buckley's rendition of 'Hallelujah' is nothing less than ubiquitous -- I've done my share of the work, of course. ;)

Of all songs by NMH, I'd have never guessed that 'In the Aeroplane' was the most popular. Hmm.

Aah, the ever enterprising Saaf has again wrapped up the year with just the right ribbon. You do get paid for this service right Lennart?

Saaf - Thanks a million for compiling the annual statistics. Indeed you are da man.

This mix is the quintessential indie hipster mix. It's got the classics (Nick Drake and Nico), some irony (The Darkness), the 80s cred (Joy Division and the Cure) and all the current big indie bands. Anyway, great job on the stats.

Thank you thank you THANK YOU, sir. Your statistics were a joy to read and look forward to throughout the year just like last time, and I feel much better this go 'round because I made it into the Top 100 (a few times!) with my glut of mixes. I'm almost somebody! Anyway, I've used over the half the songs on your mix here at least once during the year on one of my own, so I'm proud to see them making the top. I'll have to check out that Neutral Milk song now...and it elates me to see that Nico was so frequently employed. Viva "The Royal Tenenbaums"!

Very interesting. I wouldn't have guessed 'Maps' to be most popular- but then, I used it myself! anyway, cheers for the stats again. Most illuminating...

Excellent as ever, Lenny. Provides a fascinating insight into, errr, something...and proves who your real friends are whilst you're at it ;~)
Can't wait for this year to end now.

Thanks for this labor of love (or possibly anality). And yes, serious indie cred. Boy, are the folks at AtoM cool or what?

Very cool idea -- excellent cover: it is the exact same style as my Best Songs You Never Heard 2004 collection cover (though I don't post covers). Great minds think alike then? :)

Fine work once again! Who knew stats could be this much fun. I was hoping you'd do this again for 200, but I didn't want to be a pest. Surprising to see that so many songs not released this year making the top 19. Just how old is that NMH song? And when did you last see Nico and Nick Drake on MTV? Great cover too!

Nice idea and result, and good idea for the cover art. I've used 5, 8, 10, 11, and 19 myself. There are a few more here I'll probably eventually use.

Great idea!
Thanks again for the stats, too. I was only 44th in COMMENTS SUBMITTED last year (immediately above you, Saaf!), so I guess I have better get commenting this year. My goal? Top 20.
