Comment:
This mix was designed to provide contrast and listening pleasure. Feel free to yodel along! Make sure to check out Bart Plantenga's excellent book Yodel-Ay-Ee-Ooo-The Secret History of Yodeling Around the World for more information about yodeling all over the world.1. Reeves, a middle-class singer/songwriter eschewed his upbringing to become a hobo known as "the Texas Drifter." According to legend, he taught Jimmie Rodgers to yodel-but I don't believe it; their styles are too different.
2. Read the amazing story of a Swiss guy who travels to Jamaica, gets to know some important musicians, turns into a Swiss reggae dub weaver and gets Lee Perry to record some lyrics for him in his studios in Switzerland.
3. A typical Swiss yodel song performed by a Swiss yodel choir, of which there exist many in Switzerland.
4. In the 1960s Swiss yodeler Peter Hinnen successfully fused American country music with Swiss Alpine Yodeling and landed several songs in the charts in Switzerland and other European countries. Nudel Yodel (Noodle Yodel), a novelty recording from the `70s, is different-here Hinnen combines '70 funk with Swiss Vollsmusik He's backed up by Rumpelstiltz, the most successful Swiss rock band of the `70s.
5. Hinnen brought yodeling to the top ten in Switzerland in the 1960s, but throughout the `70s and '80 yodeling was decidedly uncool in Swiss popular culture. In the 'mid-1990s Christine Lauterburg changed this somewhat when she fused yodel, techno and ethno-ambient. Her first CD, Echo der Zeit, went to #9 in the Swiss album chart. "Liobäli" is one of the more experimental tracks on this album.
6. AMG: "Stimmhorn is one of Switzerland's truly inventive bands. Combining natural sounds, man-made instruments, and overtone singing, the group's concerts, in churches and similar acoustically designed spaces, have been described as `technoparty or secret religious ritual.'" Free downloads of several Stimmhorn tracks are available at the band's website.
7. Munich's Franzl Lang, the "Yodel King," has recorded some 40 albums and is well known in Europe. Here he yodels one of Switzerland's most famous yodel songs.
8. Von Goisern, an Austrian self-taught multi-instrumentalist-singer-yodeler (his trademark instrument is the accordion) has fused alpine influences with music from other parts of the world.
9. Famous for his trademark yodel, Rodgers, the "father of country music," blended elements of African-American blues, early Tin Pan Alley, and Anglo-American ballads into a unique style. Bob Dylan remarked that Rodgers is "The Man Who Started It All." "The Mule Skinner Blues" has been covered by many artists, some great covers follow later in the mix.
10. Rodgers's "Mule Skinner Blues" was an important song for Bill Monroe, the "father of bluegrass": He sang it at his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry in 1939 and it was his first release on Victor in 1940.
11. A duo popular from the '30s to `50s, famous for sky-high yodels.
12. Roberts is a legendary, but relatively unknown yodeler. Definitely one of the best and fastest yodelers.
13. Another giant among American yodelers.
14. Wylie Gustafson, famous for the Yahoo yodel trademark, covers old yodel songs and writes new ones.
17. A vaudeville singer, a white man performing in blackface, Miller recorded some yodeling in the '20 that heavily influenced singers such as Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams (who learned "Lovesick Blues" from a Miller record).
19. Yodeling from Northern Italy.
22. Leon Thomas, one of the great jazz vocalists, is little known. His amazing Pygmy-influenced yodeling
Feedback:
Excellent!
This looks fascinating.
I'm fascinated and utterly intrigued - the amount of work that's gone into this is incredible!
Are you sure you mean Leon "Redborn", Claude? ; ) Looks very cool, even if I'd likely be able to listen to this for but a few seconds!
Oh wow! This is killer! Very thorough and what a great cover.
What they all said...shout, uh, yodel it from the hillsides...great idea for a mix (though I do somewhat echo lostinthemix's sentiments).
Oops, "Redborn" now reads "Redbone." Thanks!
Ditto Siobhan. Yee-hoo!
Not only will there be yodelers in heaven, but they'll be yodeling to this mix.

Congrats on an excellent piece of work but somehow think I'll refrain from asking for a trade.
Who has time to read a book. This is the definitive mix about yodeling.
Super job on this one. (I added it to the Exhibition.)

Ditto the others--definitive and excellent!
What's that echo I hear? Great theme, execution, notes and cover!
echo previous comments......and quite nice to see Leon Thomas in here. his vocalise was certainly "other worldly!"
Splendid - this is one to have! Nice job.
This looks very cool and very fun.
Ja, was Mohr sagte!Ich wurde yodel entlang, aber meine Katze wnrde Angst haben.
I've got a weakness for the Western (cowboy) yodel, but I can see there's a lot more to it than I knew. Any chance I could trade you something for this?
I've got a feelin' called the blueOOO OOOOOOZZZ OOoooh lord since my baby said goodbye...
superb
Yup excellent mix!
Ha! Delete a comment! Just admit it! You're a perv!;) But seriously, do we get porn shit in the comments section now? Gee . . .
Hmm, Mohr, what on earth are you talking about? :-)
Cool idea for a mix. You might like The Alpine Jazz Herd, if you can find them.
awesome! i'm a real sucker for good yodeling.
There's not a lot more I can add to what everyone else has said except: Wow.
Amazing. I know Jimmie & Bill & a few others, the rest looks like a real treasure trove.
I want to hear the Emmett Miller version of "St. Louis Blues"!
The liner notes that exceeded the character limitation:
22. Leon Thomas, one of the great jazz vocalists, is little known. His amazing Pygmy-influenced yodeling is otherworldly.
26. Sweet harmony yodeling from Illinois.

Another addition to the liner notes:
23 Thomas Scholl of Munich, Germany, is the fastest yodeler in the world, according to Guinness World Records. The fastest yodel was 22 tones (15 falsetto) in one second, uttered on February 9, 1992.

I have received both, and thus far heard this one...
I have to say, I found it harder to enjoy than I thought I would. Having said that, Stimmhorn blew my mind - it's the Phillip Glass of yodeling! Also enjoy: Lauterberg, DeZuricks (oh yes!), Britt, Fendermen, and Golden Girls. Thanks for this, I'll let you know when I've heard Vol. 2.

Holy crap...do I want this!!! Fun served in 26 flavors!
Merry Xmas Lanhamyo-ho-ho-ho....
And thanks very much for this wonderful series :)
