Comment:
So, it was my 2-year AotM anniversary two days ago! Today, I met Jennergy for beer, lunch, and in-person bonding in NYC. And, for the first time in months, I have a new mix. (1) the Aretha track came from me looking for some of her Columbia tracks for Rob; (2) Marvin Gaye needs no explanation or excuse and this is one of his unplayed (these days) gems (3) NOW STOP RIGHT HERE. If you are an R&B head and you don't know about this woman and this band, waste NO TIME in getting your hands on this. It will take you directly back to a low-rider car on Whittier Blvd in 1965 ... stunning; (4) Working on a Los Angeles jazz scene complilation and Hadda just hadda be on this in the meantime; (5) Cassandra is in the Marvin Gaye category ... always a welcome addition to anything in my book; (6) my jury is still out on Edith Frost, although this cut did yield the title of this mix. She's growing on me, but she's still a little close to sounding like Liz Phair, among others; (7) Skip Spence just died ... and we never really heard this song, which is quite good ... (8) The Cash Brothers are nothing new, but their harmonies are nice and they may yet surprise us - and this song nearly rocks in an alt-country folky kinda way -- very catchy; (9) Rod Piazza is wonderful -- and there's an excellent pianist on this cut, but I can't find any information on who is backing him on this album; (10) Texas Gold is one of my favorite AATW records, every cut is good if not great --- and there was "Franklin Onn" posting his encyclopedia Bob Wills just yesterday (11) Merchant's Lunch is great music with a funny story --- " oh the Merchant's Lunch was an ocean of gloom/it looked like half-past midnight in the afternoon" (12) Scout is another deviation from the norm for me -- that lo-fi (not the mixer) thing doesn't always work for me, but she's interesting (13) nothing like depressed romance songs, no? (14) now Nina I really like - interesting orchestrations and layering -- I'm still warming up to this one; (15) Janet Bean is another odd one, nice and dark, though, and personal ... growing on me (16) is it a guilty pleasure to like Angela McCluskey's voice? I keep going back to the Wild Colonials ... and this solo album has some great cuts on it. You'll see more of them from me. So, this is what it is!Feedback:
This looks great, Sally anne. Tremendous liner notes too.
And what it is is wonderful. Love the Cassandra through Jefferson Airplane stretch and the Asleep at the Wheel -> Red City Ramblers especially and that Janet Bean album is a favorite. Happy anniversary and, uhm, what did you have for lunch?
Ditto Gerry and if this is what we get when you work to much, keep on working. Don't Stop!
