Comment:

So, this jazz bender will spill over onto another disc soon come. Maybe it was Lost-in-the-Mix joining the Splitters or seeing the Michael Caine version of "Alfie" but I just started jonesin' for some smooth yet tasteful jazz. Jazz requires more of my intellect often; I just don't pick up the nuances as easily as I do with rock-ish stuff. Anyway, (1) this is an interesting album, as it represents the cusp of "big band" and "bop" ... Miles in transition and, from what I have read, "Boplicity" is a famous number (didn't know it when I chose it); (2) loved the Alfie movie and had to have the soundtrack instantly ... beautiful, lyrical music (3) seems to me that the MQJ (the one of only two performers I have actually seen, the other being Elvin Jones) is underplayed and underappreciated -- Milt Jackson did some great work with Ray Charles in the early '60s, some of which has been re-released on the Ray Charles "Blues+Jazz" complilation on Rhino (4) found this Adderley Brothers disc at the library -- and learned a lot about them -- they were in their early '20s and just cruised up to NYC for the summer wherein they made their mark and this recording (5) Oliver Nelson was a damn good arranger (he did Sonny Rollins' arrangements on the Alfie soundtrack as a matter of fact) and this album is an underrated classic -- it's more in the big band arrangement style, but still bops -- (6) Jay McShann is more bluesy than most of the this stuff but it is right on that blues/jazz cusp (7) Anita! One of our favorite junkie girl singers! Singing one of my top ten broken heart songs ... (8) Ellis Marsalis plays Fats Waller in a live radio performance. Simply stunning (9) Another of my favorite pianists, Oscar was a brilliant accompanist (Ella, Bill Henderson, et alii) but here he gets accompanied ... (10) Teri Thornton died shortly after this record, her comeback after 20 or 30 years of childrearing, drug addiction and cancer fighting ... (11) more solo piano by another master (12) Mr. Jones, the lynch pin of so many great session, getting funky more than hard bop-y; (13) Yusef grooves the blues (14) A dynamic duo if there ever was one, Chet and Art, the cool sons of California (15) Stan stands on his own -- (16) this is one of his "Hollywood" concept records and it has that hazy smoggy sunset feel. All in all, this is fairly boppin' music and flows wonderfully well.

Real cool stuff, Sally-anne. Have a look at my "Jazz for hip cats" for a similar type of mix.

Great stuff and extra thumbs up for the extra effort in the liners. I like everything I know here, and based on the company he's keeping, I'm going to sheck out Oliver Nelson.

This is very cool stuff. Terri Thornton was one of the artists featured in my JAZZWOMEN mix (for more about her read Jazzwomen by Wayne Enstice and Janis Stockhouse). Boplicity is, as you said, a foundation piece of the Bop movement in Jazz. I am working on a similar work that will showcase Bop v. Cool Jazz. spread the music....
