Comment:

The phenomenon of guilty pleasures is quite interesting in that it reveals how much of a musical snob somebody is. Much of the guilt related to a guilty pleasure is a kneejerk reaction against its popularity. It may be true that I am a scenester who can immediately dismiss music based upon how often it is played on the radio, but I can tell a good tune when I hear it. Still, popular opinion can be so divided against you that you'd be embarassed to admit your admiration of these songs in mixed company (or to a Pitchfork reviewer). Here is where the guilty pleasure was born; in an admiration of a song that is so strong it can transcend the wince-inducing elements it may contain. With this criteria, I compiled a mix CD of my most guilty pleasures with an explanation of why each one is guilty and why each one is a pleasure. So I hope you're all ready to indulge in some private musical delights. Pull your shades up and come with me...
