Jaki Byard: Solo Piano
Comment:
Jaki Byard is probably best known as a sideman in the Mingus and Maynard Ferguson bands, but I've always loved his solo piano recordings. I first heard him on Hal Wilner's tribute to Nino Rota. Byard's style and humor are second only to Monk's. Most of these tracks are from 1960's "Blues for Smoke," which I've had for some time, and 1969's "Solo," which I recently found in the iTunes store.Feedback:
Up there with Randy Weston as one of modern jazz's great underrated pianists! Let me know if you'd like to trade. This looks very cool.
Outstanding! I must check his solo stuff out.
you don't do mixes that often but when you do them, WOW, another one I easily would pay for. grymma grejer
very nicely done!! he also played with Don Ellis from 1959-62......
Very cool sounding (listening to Jacki's Blues Next).
I'm with the swede.., he's right on.
Mmm...looks exquisite.
tasty lookin' stuff.
Ditto Gerry...don't the Japanese do great covers!
I like the mp3 sample. I should check this cat out.
mmm. ditto, salman.
I love love love jazz piano and this is one person I didn't even know about. Looks superb! Up for trading?
don't know any of this - but I will definitely check out the sound file - thanks!
How did I not notice this initially? I was going to make a mix with some of his sideman appearances and the Apollo Stompers stuff, but this is so excellent and, you know, already exists and all. Hats off to recognizing this criminally undersung talent.
