Comment:
After A Love Supreme - arguably John Coltrane's crowning achievement - `Trane went, well, off - in directions mostly too wild and wooly (and, let's face it, pretty incomprehensible) for these ears, I'm afraid. Even Tyner, Jones and Garrison, the trio which made up his great quartet of the first half of the 1960s, refused to join him in the sonic directions he wanted to go. This mix attempts to strike a balance between the boundaries Coltrane wanted to push (the first two/last two tracks) and . listenability. // Lonnie's Lament, at 11 minutes, divides the mix, with each half comprised of ballads (Alabama/Dear Lord), blues (Mr. Syms, Up `Gainst the Wall/Big Nick, Bessie's Blues) and some great blowing numbers. // The title comes from My Favorite Things, which Coltrane legitimized in jazz circles on the album of the same name (see Volume II). As the title suggest, these are some of my favourite Coltrane tunes. Volume II, currently in the works, is Coltrane playing the compositions of others. Volume III, also under construction, is others playing Coltrane.Feedback:
I looking forward to this series. Miles and Trane are my favs.
Coltrane is my absolute favorite jazz figure and this is a fantastic mix. I did one of these a couple of years ago--"I believe in all religions"--but I don't think it's nearly as structured as this. Lovely. I look forward to seeing the other volumes.
Absolutely superb, Edward. I love every track here. Looks like being a great series.
Outstanding - I'd love to catch this 'Trane!
I'm generally with you on the wild and wooly. but I enjoy nearly everything Coltrane does... at least everything I've heard. This looks to be a great series.
good work
Fine lookin' mix!
Whoa, looking amazing.
Coltrane is my favorite jazz musician, and I don't spend nearly enough time listening to his music. Although A Love Supreme is, imo, his crowning achievement, for just one song I'll take My Favorite Things.
this is the kind of mix I'd love to trade for. I've been looking for a Coltrane comp. for awhile. :)
You've included some of my absolute favorites on here - terrific stuff (that seems a bit redundant when talking about Coltrane, doesn't it)...
Great collection.
Absolutely Charming!
Really nice series here - good concepts for the others - and great notes too. Cousin Mary is one of my absolute favourites, so it's nice to see it here.
Fantastic.
Wonderful.
