Comment:
As these tracks and players suggest, much was going on in 1959, arguably one of jazz history's most fertile years. The impetus for this mix came from reading Ashley Kahn's scant but informative telling of the making of Kind of Blue, in which he notes some of the other things going on at the time. Which in turn lead me to search my vaults for what I had from that year. This is just a sampling. I had to leave a few tracks out, and there is a whack of stuff from that year, of course, that I don't possess. I tried to choose less familiar tracks from the albums in question, although with, say, Kind of Blue, Time Out or the standards-based Chet, it was hard to pick something folks haven't heard umpteen times before. While 1959 was a year of beginnings and innovation, it was also a year that saw three giants - Billie Holiday, Lester Young and Sidney Bechet - pass on. I was going to include the trio as a kind of elegiac coda, but a lack space won out.Feedback:
This looks pretty cool. 1959 was a great year.
Classic mix. Wonderful snapshot of a great year in music.
wow- some jazz i know.
Well Done...
Other fine additions which were released that year would be Bags and Trane, Blue Mitchell's Blue Soul & Ornette Coleman (whom you have already represented) also had Change of the Century!

Two of my all-time favorite LPs, Kind Of Blue and Giant Steps. Very great year for jazz. Sorry the "three" are missing.
No boubt adout it...a very fine year; and a great mix, too!
