Comment:

Well, I was trying to get this posted before the turn of the season, but I just didn't get it together. The title is a phrase from Hamilton Basso's excellent "you-can't-go-home-again-or-else" Southern novel, The View from Pompey's Head, which, I allow is a funny name, but a first-rate read. I've been saving up that phrase for months.

(1) Booker T & the MGs never fail ya, ya know. Donald "Duck" Dunn's bass line on this cut is great.
(2) One of my brothers gave me G. Love for my b-day last year. We all want to have a "baby with sauce" and to be one.
(3) Pearl Harbor and gang aren't the finest example of New Wave and/or pop punk but they were sure fun to see in the Bay Area in the late 70s/early 80s, as I'll bet a few of you remember. Plus, Joe Strummer thought enough of Pearl to marry her.
(4) We all need a little Township Jive in our lives to keep us finger popping and doin' the rhythmic squirm.
(5) How I ran across Big Shirley, I'm not sure, but any record called Funkasm was one I wanted to hear. And turns out to be infectious music . I mean, it ain't P-Funk, but it's fun.
(6) This just popped out off of the excellent complilation A Town South of Bakersfield.
(7) Ketty Lester's version of this standard may be my favorite, it's kind of a personal declaration, a moment of self-understanding spoken out loud, with a nice piano backing. One of those "I-don't-want-to-admit-that-I-was wrong-and-now-I'm-broken-hearted moments" of realization spoken outloud.
(8) Time Out New York recommended Dayna Kurtz so I highly that I had to check her out. I pass that recommendation on to you. Wry and emotional on this cut.
(9) George Jones needs to end up on the playlist every one-in-awhile, no? Plus, when the hell is someone going to get around to producing the much needed Hank Cochran tribute? Emmylou? Steve Earle? Elvis Costello? Are you listening?
(10) So my youngest brother sent me some vague inquiry about a great guitarist who was vaguely connected with the Dead circles in the `70s. Would I, perchance, have a clue? (11) That same brother is a major Bill Frisell head and gave me a couple of his discs for x-mas. This song is literally heart-rending, tear-welling beauty. Carl, my bro, would give Greg Leisz as much credit as Ry.
12) Texas Hobart inspired me to look Libby up. And then Rob put Fred's version of Shake Sugaree on a disc and I was gone all over.
13) Just an Etta James fan and I love this song, too. Gotta keep it in wide circulation.
14) Same with Charles Brown. Always a pleasure.
15) Somone's recent Lucinda mix inspired me to go looking for this. Oddly enough, the first time I saw Lucinda (like Emmylou before her), I did't much, well, cotton to her. Then, during a bad spell with a bad man, I heard this song at a benefit. Lucinda seemed to be in the same place and this song was so defiant and angry. I was a convert.
16) I never listen to Jimi enough, maybe because it is so intense. Here's a small, but lethal dose.
17) Borrowed the Bonus Tracks disc from my short-term roommate John (honoree of "Caught in the Struggle) . was amazed to find out that Eric Clapton wanted to join the Band at this time and thought Cream or maybe Blind Faith could be the English version.
18) That John-boy was a big Allman Brothers freak. Until I listened to this excellent compilation, I was more of a Duane fan. But Gregg is really terrific and this compilation is all first rate.
19) So here you have a terrific combination of folk and jazz. I don't think I've thanked Rob enough for introducing me to Fred. I'm just wild about his voice. If you haven't bothered, check him out. Many treats in store. And he and Les McCann sound wonderful together.
20) Ohhhhh, this one is sappy sappy sappy . country pop designed to melt those low-rise fanny-tight jeans off of a bouffant haired unsatisfied housewife who was likely listening to that Glen Campbell song "Everyday Housewife" and thinking it was time to change her life . really excellent pop here.
