Comment:

This mix (and its companion) charts most of Thelonious Monk's better-known tunes as well as some more obscure ones. There are a lot of great tunes missing, but I sense there might be a Vol. 3 down the road. These two mixes were inspired, in part, by Nick Falivena's two recent Monk mixes and the very unique rendition of Jackie-ing by Roswell Rudd on a recently purchased cd. // I've cheated a bit, using Monk fanatic Steve Lacy, Wynton Marsalis, Jane Bunnett, Lew Tabakin and Danilo Perez on each volume (the Eric Reed on 2 is just Reed in a trio setting, although it's from the same Marsalis album), but my goal was to get in as many different tunes (although my stylistic penchant for liking to book-end my mixes with the same tune kind of contradicts this `imperative'). Tyner appears twice (on 2) just to give a taste of two different interpretations of a tune from different stages in an artist's career, so I hope I can be excused for breaking the same-artist-per-mix-repeat rule there (Blue Monk also happens to be one of my favourite Monk tunes). I cheat a bit, too, with the Milt Jackson track (on 2), as the backing pianist is, well, you know who. // The title is in deference to an argument that got lost on Nick's (infamous?!) Miles v. Monk mix about folks mishandling or glossing over the rhythmic intricacies of Monk. The "ish" implies these are, in the main, interpretations both loyal and disloyal, both of which are fine by me!

Great work again, Edward. I know a lot of the tracks by name, but not in these versions.

These mixes have been great. It's incredible how the level of jazz awareness has been raised around here recently. Thanks.

Both of these mixes, like their subject, are fantastic. I'd be interested to hear what you think of the Lounge Lizards' versions of "Well, You Needn't" and "Epistrophy" from their debut disc... (I'm not saying that you should or should not have included them on your mixes, I'm just asking your opinion).

Interesting series. I can't say I'm too familiar with all the artists, but I'm a fan of MOnk.
