Comment:
This mix was inspired by learning (via a recent, impressive-as-ever Dom mix) Bill Evans and Herbie Mann had done a `cover' of Erik Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1. Not at all surprising, of course, as the influence of Satie on Evans' composing and playing is unmistakable (and, of course, on a stream of jazz that runs from Evans through to Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Michel Petrucciani, to name just three). I have but one Satie disc, a Naxos cheapie that nonetheless has a lot of the composer's `greatest hits,' and serves the purpose of this mix quite nicely. For variety, and a (very) slight change of pace, I've included two tributes to both men as the mix's centerpiece. // (I was tempted to post this under the "sleep" heading, as this is a VERY mellow mix, but thought that might cheapen things. It's obviously not at all a "jazzy" mix, but I thought "jazz" a more respectable heading than "sleep".)Feedback:
Gorgeous!
I'm tellin' ya, tonight is Satie night.
Great idea and gorgeous execution. "Peace Piece", for instance, is one of my favorite jazz tracks of all-time.
I don't know if everybody digs Bill Evans but I sure do!
Very nice! - I love both Evans and Satie. Tell me what mood the alternating counterpoint evokes. How is it with dinner for 4?
Impressive as ever!
I love it.
Ken Vandermark is another one who finds inspiration in the music of Erik Satie. There is a track on his solo record called Panels dedicated to Satie and Piet Mondrian. Great idea, great mix
Mellow in a stimulatin' percolatin' kind of intellectually satisfyin' way.
