Comment:
Film Noir (literally 'black film or cinema') was coined by French film critics (first by Frank Nino in 1946) who noticed the trend of how 'dark' and black the looks and themes were of many American crime and detective films released in France following the war. It was a style of black and white American films that first evolved in the 1940s, became prominent in the post-war era, and lasted in a classic "Golden Age" period until about 1960. Strictly speaking, however, film noir is not a genre, but rather the mood, style, point-of-view, or tone of a film. Dark rooms with light slicing through venetian blinds, alleys cluttered with garbage, abandoned warehouses where dust hangs in the air, rain-slickened streets with water still running in the gutters, dark detective offices overlooking busy streets: this is the stuff of film noir--that most magnificent of film forms--a perfect blend of form and content, where the desperation and hopelessness of the situations is reflected in the visual style, which drenches the world in shadows and only occasional bursts of sunlight. Film noir, occasionally acerbic, usually cynical, and often enthralling, gave us characters trying to elude some mysterious past that continues to haunt them, hunting them down with a fatalism that taunts and teases before delivering the final, definitive blow.A word about the music...in an attempt to capture the mood of the Film Noir Genre, I have utilized soundtrack recordings, movie dialogue and various musical sources to in the hope of evoking the hardboiled nature, the impending doom and the taut suspense of these classics. I hope you enjoy.
Feedback:
I'd never associate the Jimmy Giuffre track with film noir -- too jaunty, in my mind. But most of this looks great. Like the Zorn picks especially.
Nice mix and cover. I was planning on something similar but more of a soundtrack to a noir film never made.
I see your point.
But, I feel the opening truly captures the film noir. Whereas I agree that this song would not an ideal pick for a a soundtrack, it would not feel out of place in the nightclub scenes of many of these movies.
Additionally, the guitar work provides a nice flow from the Almeida, Laurindo Almeida tune which precedes. Plus, it adds to the overall variance found in many Film Noir's.
Example: A quick listen to Touch of Evil will provide cues to strong rock, jazz and afro-caribean influences.

Ah, gettin' schooled by the gnome... This is outstanding, mister. These tracks stand on their own so well. I'm listening to it without looking at a track list, and I'm amazed at how every piece holds together as a little sound story. Certainly in the top mixes I've had the pleasure of taking in.
fascinated by the complexity of your execution of mixes & stunned by the quality of the final result. this one is a personal favourite - it's aural assault on every one of my music nerves, in the best of ways!
