Comment:
Oh yeah, kickin' it old school. Many self explanatory tracks here. Exceptions:9. The most famous "answer song" to "Roxanne Roxanne," which apparently inspired over 300 replies. This one was done by a 14-year-old high school kid, and despite a little too much repetition in the rhyme, she steps to UTFO quite effectively.
10. I remembered a song from the middle school bus that included a sample of the "Inspector Gadget" theme. I went looking and found this on iTMS, only to realize it wasn't the song I remembered (that would be Doug E. Fresh's "The Show"). No problem, as the samples of Gadget's dialog will send you flashing back to after-school TV much more effectively.
15. Is there a sleazier song? Probably, but not on one of my mixes.
16. What the heck happened to these guys? Oh yeah. Rule #3502 of one-hit wonders: if you want your career to last more than a year, don't make a song in 1989 that includes the line "headin' for the '90s". It's a good way to guarantee that it won't ever get played again.
17. and 18. -- I couldn't pass up the opportunity to put on some unusual songs by bands I actually listen to. "So Alive"--it's hard to imagine the same band (plus Peter Murphy) playing "Bela Lugosi's Dead" ten years previously. And "Get Up"? I'm not sure there's another song in REM's corpus that is so upbeat without being slightly ironic ("Stand") or embarassing ("Shiny Happy People").
One of a brace of new mixes from the decade whose music you love to hate.
Feedback:
nice. yup.
Lol. Before every university exam this year, my friend and I listen to "Under Pressure" to get us pumped... and then cracked up wildly. It's a fabulous song. ...and your 80s soundtracks would be sadly lacking without a little Flock of Seagulls addition! ;)
Oh! And I also kill myself laughing every time I see a reference to Depeche Mode... I always think about the references to them in my French cahier in gr. 4... and how the publishers must have felt "hip" to have included them. :)
