Comment:

After I posted The Joy of Yodeling back in January, Joey de Vivre posted his comprehensive If I Could Only Learn to Yodel Mix that covered a lot of American yodeling. This mix will focus a bit more on other countries and other cultures.

3. Von Goisern, an Austrian self-taught multi-instrumentalist-singer-yodeler (his trademark instrument is the accordion) has fused alpine influences with music from other parts of the world.

4.-7. Falsetto singing and yodeling are very popular in Hawaiian music. How yodeling came to Hawaii is unclear; some think it was introduced by missionaries.
8.-9. The Rustavi Ensemble, a popular polyphonic ensemble, performs Georgian folk music. From the liner notes: "An unusual feature (.) is the krimanchuli, a high-register, sustained yodel that embellishes the lower voices with striking melodic leaps and bold rhythmic motives."
10. The musical tradition of the Pygmies includes a form of yodeling.
11. Bollywood star Kishore Kumar was an accomplished yodeler, too.

12. I first learned about this mysterious recording from Joey de Vivre. Then I discovered that it is available on the Internet as part of the 365 Days Project. Is the singer really Cambodian? Is he singing in Thai, but with a distinctly Khmer/Lao accent? Read about it here.
13. Thanks to menghsindy for this yodel treasure. Not much is known about George van Dusen.

14. Ever since I heard Peter Rowan perform this song live in a spellbinding performance, I was trying to get a recording of it. The studio version doesn't include much yodeling though, but finally I got this great live recording. I had an Internet discussion with someone who claimed that Rowan does not really yodel here, but "'uvulate,' which uses the uvula, that little soft tissue where the roof of your mouth ends, to vibrate and produce a high pitched vibrato." Well, maybe there is a difference, but it sure sounds very similar.
19. Yodeling from the Netherlands.

20. Harry Torrani is considered the best yodeler from England.
21. A Swiss yodel song.
22. More Alpine style yodeling. Lisa Ward-Rieder was born in Switzerland, moved to Oregon and now lives in Canada.

23. Randy Erwin both covers classic yodel songs and writes new ones. This is one of his own.

25. Reeves, a middle-class singer/songwriter eschewed his upbringing to become a hobo known as "the Texas Drifter."

26. From the Musicweb Encyclopedia of Popular Music: "Popular in the '30s-40s-50s, working as a duet comprising of Carolyn (b.1919) and sister Mary Jane DeZurik (b. 1917). Noted for sky-high yodels, they could also make their yodels sound like chickens and were later known also as the Cackle Sisters. Appeared as the DeZurik Sisters on the WLS Barn Dance (1936-49) and as the Cackle Sisters on the Grand Ole Opry (1944-48)." This song is available as part of the 365 Days Project here.

I thought a second volume of "The Joy of Yodeling" would be enough to wrap up the story of yodeling, but there is so much more to explore. Australia's yodeling scene with the incredible Mary Schneider, for example. The yodeling-meets-techno stuff, or more contemporary yodeling songs from people like Wylie Gustafson, Randy Erwin, Ranger Doug, to name a few. Hank Williams, whose "Lovesick Blues" has been described as the "Stairway to Heaven" of yodeling, hasn't made it onto a yodel mix yet, neither. And I got a few yodeling files from fellow mixers which I'd like to include, as well. So stay tuned for Volume 3.
BTW, I heard that a "Rough Guide to Yodeling" is in the works, too.

I'd be interested in hearing this and the other volume sometime, if you're at all interested in any of my stuff...

I might have to swallow my prejudices and request these down the road, Claude. Your enthusiasm and dedication (as seen in your notes), as well as the taste I know you have for other music, suggests I might be in for a surprise. Perhaps even a pleasant one. ;^ )

I think this is the best cover I've seen here. You got me with the monkey and the kid missing a couple of toots. I can't say much of the musical selections because I don't know them, but seeing the diversity of it, I'm sure it's great.

Yahoo! you ARE the yodeling king, & you know I've GOT to hear this . . . it makes sense to me that yodelling goes around the world, crossing cultures without a hitch, 'cause it's very infectious . . . I can see you've already got a lot of trade requests for this, but can you add me to the list?

Looks amazing, Claude. Great notes & cover too.
Was I meant to fall on the floor laughing at the mention of yodelling-meets-techno cross over? (I did) :)
My Global Choral II series has taken a backseat but once I have it sorted i'll definitely be in touch.

If this is half as good as the first volume, it's gotta be amazing! Let me know when you want to trade again. This is boss. Haven't heard Slim Whitman in a while - growing up in the US, he seemed like a real square. Who would think that he was actually so cool?

I am just blown away by the quality of these mixes, and enjoying gittin' down with my Swiss roots... One of the high points in AOTM history, IMHO. The stretch of Hawaiian tunes on here makes it.
