Chicory Chick: Anita O'Day
Comment:
That Anita O'Day was one hep chick! She swung with Gene Krupa, Roy Eldridge, Nat King Cole, Benny Carter, Teddy Wilson; she got busted for marijuana in 1947 which the cops thought would do her in but her audience didn't care.
She's a scat vocaliste in a league with Ella Fitzgerald, which is as good as it gets, in my book.
She calls her own shots, takes a tune wherever she wants to go with it, rarely goes down the same road twice. This set of favorites are all from the 1940's, the earlier ones mostly w/ Gene Krupa & Roy Eldridge & then the later ones with a variety of other bands.
Feedback:
Fantastic subject for a mix, Jeff. Great songs and a hugely underrated singer.
I agree completely with Gerry!
i've heard so little of her that i'd love to hear this mix. nice subject for a single artist mix.
Ditto Gerry. She was awesome.
Just great, Jeff, but I would expect no less from you (or from the lovely Miss O'Day). I love that version of Them There Eyes.
This looks fantastic. In fact, I'd like to trade for this... perhaps the James Chance comp for this one?
Great stuff!
sweeeeeeeetttt!!!!
Really interesting. I'll make sure to check her out.
I agree with all below! Kick it!
Okay, I'm curious...
