Comment:
Elvin Jones, who made his mark on drumming and jazz with the famous 1960s John Coltrane quartet, died last month at 76. This is really much more of a tribute than a showcase, hence the four pieces not with Jones as leader and the attempt to make this as musical a mix as possible (vs. a drum-fest). Jones was an originator on the kit AND a great bandleader, as I hope this mix indicates for any of those interested in a listen. These pieces have been culled from Coltrane's Crescent and Coltrane Plays the Blues, as well as Elvin! and the 8-disc Mosaic box-set of Jones' work for Blue Note in the late 60s and early 70s. The DeFrancesco is from Legacy, one of the last albums to feature the late Jimmy Smith, and the Jackson is from a 1996 CD titled A Look Within. The title is a somewhat literal, macabre play on the Chick Corea tune, Tones for Joan's Bones.Feedback:
Wow! I had even missed his passing. Thanks for this. Have you heard his work with Bill Frisell? Very interesting.
John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones-one my most favorite bands ever.
nice tribute, Edward.
YES!!! My absolute favorite jazz drummer, represented very, very well. I mourned his passing, too... wasn't it more than a month ago? Seems like it was March or maybe early April, but that doesn't really matter (just asking, really). I thought about doing something similar to this, but you beat me to it.
Great stuff!
Elvin died May 18 of last year (2004) but that does not detract from this excellent mix.
A wonderful mix and a great tribute. The guy could play with anyone too. I loved that album he did with Oregon.
Ooops. Now don't I feel daft. Shows that I should read beyond a shoddy website!
Hey, it's a great mix and he was a fantastic figure, so don't feel bad...
