Comment:
Work has been slow, so there's some available mix time. This one has been brewing for awhile, but some new CDs floated into my life which inspired me to finish it. I am dead dog tired, so there won't be too much insight in these notes, but I'll give it a try. (1) This collection of Tucson Garage music is sooo good, so much fun. Much better than I expected ... which begs the question about why I acquired it in the first place but ... look for it to fill out your garage band collection. (2) On first listens this sounds just like another country gal singer, but the song selection and production are just a little bit above the usual ... Julie might just transcend CMT (3) Will Hoge is a little more rock n roll than I my usual but it stands up (4) A new Ry Cooder record is nearly a holy occasion for me. Since this one is about my "homeland" it's even more special. I've only had this for a couple of days, but it's really really great. (5) Damn good blues with a slightly tropical twist (6) I inherited Rilo Kelly on my computer but this is damn infectious(There's blood in my mouth/
'cause I've been biting my tongue all week/
I keep on talkin' trash/ but I never say anything/
And the talkin' leads to touchin' /
and the touchin' leads to sex /
and then there is no mystery left.)
(7) Another inheritance and excellent music is it (8) Still another legacy -- great stuff (9) More Ry -- killer slide with a 60s rock feel (10) The always great, underrated Peter Case (11) Not sure how I feel about this band, but this has enough country twang to keep me listening --- always a pushover for pedal steel (12) Thanks to Kevin Spacey for letting me fly my Bobby Darin freak flag proudly -- he comes close to the saloon song style of Frank Sinatra on this cut (13) I don't even know where this disc came from but this one is catchy (14) More alt country madness -- nice guitar and banjo -- kinda like the Byrds (15) Some youngster at work reminded me about the most excellent Au Pairs (16) Joe Flood is a local Brooklyn guy (17) Percy Mayfield cooling out all the country flavor (18) Mush mouth Martyn, but he can sure play (19) more slide guitar - definitely a Ry discipline (20) some necessary female energy with a little ominous banjo -- like a hillbilly film noir (21) and some dulcimer as a digestif.
Feedback:
Sweet. Nice to see Po' Girl getting noticed south of the 49th.
This is lovely- I love "Three Cool Cats" and I'm sure Ry's take on it kicks butt!
Oooh look at you capitalising your song titles...next thing you'll be leaving your foot-prints...luv the Au Pairs best of all, Darin too...I read a review of Ry's new album & it wasn't too hopefull.
this looks good! glad to hear there's a new Cooder......will have to seek it out!!!!
Yes indeed, this looks mighty fine!! And I'm with you on Mr. Cooder -- I was thrilled to see he had a new album out, and I just picked it up today and am really looking forward to an undisturbed listen. Great job!
From what I know of this, it looks great. Any chance you'll be compiling a CD of Ry's '70s stuff? ;-)
