Comment:
Another volume in the series. (1) Early(ish) Van. The hairy-chested God lover ... the spiritual Tarzan. Dom's made me feel sheepish about my preference for Van, but I guess there's no time like the present to acknowledge that I am one big sucker for love songs. Then again, I know I am in good company as Emmylou Harris says that "a song without a tear in it ain't a song worth singing" (that's kind of paraphrase). Anyway, this is Van in his "tribute to r&b" mode and not his "just a closer walk with thee" phase. (2) Esther Phillips is way under-played. And so is Johnny Otis. See also their homeboy at #7 (3) So Percy Mayfield ... he's the kind of the INSINUATING BLUES. There's always some kind of guilt, or shame, or scam or incrimination or .... hmmm... seduction? ... as a undertone to his very smooth singing. I'm sure my mother wouldn't approve. (4) A comeback from someone who should have never ever gone away -- at all. (5) And she never does go away. The McRae here is none other than Carmen (6) More California sound, but in a mellow tone. (7) This Baron Mingus fellow is none other than Charles. And the California scene is so great. I need to do an introductory compilation from the stuff I have. (8) A wild and woolly instrumental (9) Gary Davis was reverend in more ways than one, because he certainly deserves our reverence. (10) This song original appeared on the "what-must-be-painful-beyond-reason" Allman and Woman. I cringe to write that title. (Sorry Dom, but this can't be your favorite Cher vintage.) Anywho this is version is sublime. (if you like whiney-ass romantic songs) Jackson Browne is theauthor. (11) I think the Cash Brothers are pretty good -- they might end up somewhere. This cut is as post-punk as it is alt. country. (12) Will J sounds so much like Gregg Allman I keep having to check. Dreamy and unkempt. (13) Talk about sublime. I thank Rob for bitch slapping me, to coin a phrase, into waking up and smelling the coffee that is S. Merritt. (14) Hippie-chick singing about dreams. (15) More hippie-esque chicks singing about dreams, but with a nice structure and harmony. (16) Another Conroy revelation. Had this been a record, I would have worn out the grooves on this cut. So very Greenwich Village 1964. I can feel my beret and Silk Cuts when I hear this. (17) Why didn't any of you tell me that Raul Malo channelled Roy Orbison? (18) More alt. country dream rocking (19) Kind of inane lyrics really, but a decent composition (20) My pal Franklin did some partying with these guys in Madison, Wisconsin. String swing they say about themselves. (21) I'm a big fan of Angela's voice. Her solo record is pretty good. (22) I wish Rumsfeld, Bush, Cheney, Rice, et cie would sing this to the planet. (I dreamed the world had all agreed to put an end to war.) (23) This came up on the iTunes shuffle at work. After awhile, it grew on me. Turns out these folks were once Jonathan Fire-Eater. I saw them once and thought they were pretty good. This makes a good, non-mellow ending to this mix.
Feedback:
great piece of work
Nice selections.
No I like much of Van esp the early Van & that particular album..it looks a superduper mix!
C'est un rOve! Merci pour ne pas mettre "Dream Weaver."
Dreamy, as ever. Very nice. I had this "American Psycho"-esque dream this morning. I'd forgotten how powerful dreams can be.
I can only dream of making a mix this good!
Nice! For what it's worth, last night I dreamed about making spaghetti in a washing machine.
This is like a dream come true. Nice work, Sally. And, I really dig Van.
Very nice mix. Great picks throughout. I had the same dream as Sean last night. Weird. Woke up in a sweat but of course it might have been the weather.
nice mix Sally and great notes to boot!!!!!!
Great work & notes.
This is fantastic...very, very nice, indeed.
This looks really great, Sally! I've got a soft spot in my heart for Van too!
Very nice, especially the S. Merritt track... ;-) (You're welcome... did I send you my Magnetic Fields mix? I'm really hazy on that, unfortunately, but I'm glad you like him.)
This is incredibly good, Sally. (BTW, I'm a Van Morrison freak, too!) This is beyond WOW. Excellent in every way.
I really like this theme. Looks great.
