Comment:

Years ago, I started making custom '80s compilations for people using the same title and artwork. This is the latest version, and perhaps the greatest. It's a bit like those "alternate '80s" comps you see around here. I made this for a friend as a sort of response to a three disc set someone had made for her a while back that mixed big hits in with obscurities. My intent here was to leave off more customary '80s compilation fare and shoot for my favorite songs released in the '80s that she didn't have (meaning I sadly had to omit stuff like The Smiths and Echo & The Bunnymen) or had probably never heard. It consists of minor hits, one hit wonders, album tracks by big names, UK hits and other bizarre fare. I made virtually no attempt to go with conventional wisdom on this one. A second volume will be forthcoming, with Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, Men Without Hats, Wall Of Voodoo, Joe Jackson and more. Track 1 is a Max Headroom Coke commercial, track 12 is a scene from "Silver Spoons" with Mr. T in Ricky's history class and the secret track is the famous "I learned it by watching you!" anti-drug PSA. Oh, and yes, I'm aware that two of these tracks were released in the '70s, but if major label comps can fudge it, so can I.

Despite (or probably because) I love '80s music so much, it gets kinda tiresome to see the same 20 or so songs repeatedly clog every '80s-themed mix around here, so it's always a delight to find a list of lesser-known songs, especially since it usually means there will be some I've never heard before and can thus now track down. So thanks :) And since the only 2 songs on this mix that I've heard before - "Ana Ng" and "Ca Plane Pour Moi" - are amongst my favorite songs ever, I can tell the rest of these are going to be winners, too. Fantastic mix!

I like this a lot. As Mike said, it's really nice to see the horizons of the 80s being broadened - a lot of what you see on "best of the 80s" mixes is in no way the best stuff. So you've made some excellent choices here - including Talking Heads, Plastic Bertrand and XTC. Looking forward to the one with Tom Waits and Wall of Voodoo!

And Romeo Void! But this a great place to start! And The Fall from that period was pretty wild.

Revenge of the Nerds is one of my favourite 80s movies. So's Ghostbusters ;).

A lot of fantastic songs here.
