Comment:

It's always kind of bugged me that I decided to "dumb down" the Divine Comedy samplers I made a few years ago, making the first disc a straight ahead singles comp and the second disc a "best of the deep cuts and b-sides" collection. Making my Elvis Costello favorites discs recently inspired me to do a similar disc for The Divine Comedy. I'm usually in a quandary as to how to compile my top favorite artists, so I'm finding it much easier to compile discs using the "one disc of favorites, another disc of second-most favorites" method these days. It must be said that I'm retooling some of these compilations partially because I'm planning on turning a few friends on to these artists. Plus, retooling my TDC comp lets me include some stuff from their last album, "Absent Friends." I've got enough material lined up for a second disc of favorites...and maybe even a third. I'll most likely put all these discs together in a "box set," and I've been contemplating using the title and artwork of my original sampler "Smile While Your Head Explodes," but we'll see. So yeah, these are my utmost favorites by one of my top five artists, if forced at gunpoint to decide. I'd like to add that the flow on this disc is really something to behold...maybe not so much by my own design (although I did spend considerable time working it out) but aided by the fact that Neil Hannon's work really seems to mix nicely with itself. BTW, "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" was the last track to get axed. Special thanks again go to Dr E Vibenstein, who started my TDC obsession in the first place, eight years ago now.

As far as I'm concerned you can keep as many of these coming as you like! and this does seem like it flows really nicely - especially the penultimate track into the last one. The first track is also a lovely way to begin. In turth, I haven't listened to TDC much recently, so I'm off to give Absent Friends a spin!

I've actually been rethinking my Divine Comedy comp from a couple of years ago. At the moment, it's chronological, but it's one of the only single-artist mixes I've done that does *not* benefit from such treatment. At any rate, I love these guys and you've hit several of my favorites ("If...," "Ten Seconds to Midnight," "Tonight We Fly," "Something for the Weekend") and my two absolute favorites ("Your Daddy's Car" and "Get Me to a Monastery") here. "Timewatching" is probably in my top 5, as well, but I greatly prefer the A Short Album About Love version. It's sad to see that my third-favorite song ("In Pursuit of Happiness") didn't make it, nor did "Absent Friends," my favorite from the last album... but hey, it's your mix. ;-) I'm sure others would take offense to such comments, but considering the nature of our relationship here (i.e., engaging in friendly nitpicking on single-artist mixes), I don't think you do.
