Comment:

For the uninitiated, the horror movie boom in the 70's spawned potentially thousands of titles produced in Italy. For the earlier part of the 70's, the typical giallo (a seedy, exploitative thriller) featured a soundtrack ripping off every theme and cue from Ennio Morricone. That is, until Dario Argento, one of the godfathers of modern horror, chose a different route after seeing Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Argento hooked up with Cherry Five, a progressive rock band based in Rome, to score his film Profondo Rosso (Deep Red). What resulted was one of the most important paradigm shifts in theatrical music. For Argento's films, Cherry Five were now known as Goblin. It soon became standard for every movie out of Italy to feature a funky, progressive rock soundtrack.

Second only to Argento was Lucio Fulci. Fucli is, perhaps, the goriest director to ever make movies. His horrors are some of the most surreal and bloody movies and it has cemented his reputation firmly. As Goblin was to Argento, Fabio Frizzi was to Fulci. He is one of the most versatile horror composers of the time. Some of his soundtracks are very psychedelic.

Here is a good glace at his work for Fulci.
