Essential Britpop: Origins through Second Wave
Comment:
A chronology of the Brit Pop movement from 1995 to present...suggestions are welcome. I know there are a couple of big players left off of here, but I like this mix.
Feedback:
I'd add The Divine Comedy, who I suppose are technically Irish and only briefly kinda touched on actual "Britpop." But still...they'd fit in nicely, I feel.
i really like this mix, so i dont feel bad suggesting saint etienne. i also really really like the drawing (and the handwriting)...are they yours?
The Strokes are Britpop? They're from Manhattan... That said, I like a lot of these songs.
if youre going to say the strokes are from n.y. why not also say that bloc party is from canada
True that the Strokes and Bloc Party are not from Britain, but I would say that the vast majority of their influence is Britpop, so they really do fit in with the whole "second wave" idea.
Some glaring omissions: Happy Mondays, Suede, Primal Scream, The Charlatans UK, Manic Street Preachers and Stone Roses
And, quite worthy of inclusion are: Ash, The Autears, Richard Ashcroft, Black Grape, The Bluetones, The Boo Radleys, Gomez, Kula Shaker, Lush, Mansun, Martin Newell, Ocean Colour Scene and Super Furry Animals (Scotland).
And if you are going to include bands who don't exactly fit the mold of the britpop style but rather the fact they originated in the U.K., then including: The Coral and the countless Shoegazing bands from the early to mid-90s (e.g. My Bloody Valentine (Ireland), Ride, Slowdive, Catherine Wheel, Moose & The Telescopes) would not be overreaching.
Thanks for the trip down musical way, by the way.

I thought Brit Pop died & went away eons ago...well it did here in the UK...but praps not in the US...unless you mean bands that originate from here in the UK and not the ' Brit Pop' wave that begun with Blur's Modern Life Is Rubbish & was seen as an anti-dote to the US Grunge Bands that dominated the UK ...other bands would certainly have to include The Smiths inspired Gene, The Bluetones, Ash etc etc.
as everyone has rightfully said, there are some great songs here. but, radiohead wasn't brit pop, that blur song isn't either - the bloc party is from britain though. for britpop, follow musicgnome's directions - there's alot of great music there.
Really nice!
