NEW ORLEANS IS SINKING
Comment:
Not really an elegy and not quite a paean - somewhere in between, I guess. New Orleans is a city that's existed - in a rather rose-coloured, mythic sort of way - solely in my imagination, as the birthplace of jazz. I've never been there, but it's been my dream to go. While my dream's been dampened somewhat, the dreams of so many more, more importantly, have been shattered. This is my feeble attempt to acknowledge the complexity of their tragedy.Feedback:
Sweet, bittersweet. Hard to fathom the injury if not destruction of such an important place and people.
Nice. Tom Waits' "I Wish I Was in New Orleans" would fit in well too.
I sorely wish you didn't have to make this one, as good as it looks, Edward. I was there many moons ago (1984-?)
& ran the Crescent City Classic, through the city's streets to the Jambalaya & Beer Festival @ the finish
line in Audubon Park.
They really know how to party down there...& now they're gonna' need a National outpouring
of contribution, understanding, prayer and good wishes...as they rebuild the bowl.

Nice. I started to make a mix about storms and floods, but as the seriousness of the situation grew I lost my stomach for it. This is a nice approach.
Sad news for a historical section of Americas History.........nice selections Edward!!!!!
Very nice, Edward.
The underbelly of America has been finally exposed to the world! The shock at the poverty in your country is staggering, and the incompetence at how your government is coping with such a major tragedy is shocking. My sympathies are with you New Orleans...& a great lookin' mix!
New Orleans farewell -- I hope not, but the news is looking worse & worse. City of legend & fountainhead of jazz, it may never be the same . . . these 21 tracks are as fine a musical tribute as I can imagine.
I Love The Mix, And The Sentiments. Really Beautiful.
I had thought about doing something like this but you've done it much better than I would've. I work in the Population Distribution Branch of the US Census Bureau and the last couple of days have been busy as we've been getting requests for our data by other agencies and the press to get a sense of how many people have been affected by the flooding. The number of people affected is staggering and the long-term impact on New Orleans is anybody's guess. I was in New Orleans a few years ago and read a report of the evacuation plans in the event of a natural disaster. I was staying in a high-rise hotel on Canal St. and what struck me was that they acknowledged that in the event of a major emergency that a substantial number of people would not be able to be evacuated and that they were relying on high-rise buildings to house people in the event of a flood. Amazing for a city that is mostly below sea level. Also, I'm getting tired of hearing news commentators saying that the devastation is "just like in a Third world country". Never mind the passe terminology, but the ignorance of most of the reporting is just aggravating.
Soundtrack for a jazz funeral for a wonderful city, that will rise again, of course. Know quite a few of these, but #9 is new. Always enjoyed the Louis Armstrong version, though. Will bide my time until Preservation Hall and Tipitina's reopen.
I love that city, I spent some time there back in 92 and I'm still dreaming of getting back but it seems impossible now, lovely music of course
Lovely tribute, Edward, your comments could be my own.
A wonderful and extremely thoughtful mix.
A great tribute.A terrible tragedy though.
Great mix and some gret irony (haven't even thought of the Tragically Hip in years). Shitty situation. Never been to New Orleans, and I guess I never will now which is a great pity since it was on my list of things to do. Cannot believe the coverage on TV. The US government appears (at least from here) to be completely usless. I am very sorry.
my heart is breaking i need to know others are crying for the people and culture of new orleans. i'm keeping my brothers and sisters in my heart.
I can't really expand on what everyone else has said. A fine mix made to honor a fine city.
Not a jazz listener, but excellent stuff and a fine theme. Mine (more modern rock) was at http://www.artofthemix.org/findamix/Getcontents.asp?strMixId=95494, and also features the Hip song.
An Exhibit is a great idea. But needs a Canadian curator, we yanks are too emotional on this one. Any nominations?
It seems right that you put one together Edward, with your love and understanding of jazz. Thank you for giving us a little something to help us deal with the loss.
This excellent mix has been added to the Exhibit "Where You Got Those Shoes: New Orleans." Check it out at the AOTM Exhibits page.
