The Joy of Yodeling, Vol. 3
Comment:
Yahoo, here is the final--and probably most eclectic--mix in my Joy of Yodeling series. In the first part of this mix you can hear yodeling used in different styles of music not usually associated with yodeling, such as avant-garde, dance, electronica, ambient, dub and even classical. Expect the unexpected."Whoa Buck" is a complete turn-around back to music of the past, and it marks the beginning of the second part of the mix. This amazing field holler brings up the question whether the American yodel--commonly thought to have been influenced by the Alpine style of yodeling--might not also have been shaped by African-influenced worksongs and hollers.
Since I didn't include Hank Williams on the last two volumes, he gets two tracks on this one. After all, his version of "Lovesick Blues" is one of the most popular yodel songs of all times. The rest of the CD showcases yodeling by artists alive and performing today.
1 Shelley Hirsch, an avant-garde singer from New York, demonstrates a freeform approach to yodeling
3 Alpendub is from Berlin and plays some kind of dub-reggae-electronica
4 "A sound attack straight from the Alps," reads the warning on the cover of this minor dance hit from Austria
5 Two French guys mix dance beats and Pygmy voices
6 More Pygmy voices, mixed with trip-hop
7 Swiss yodeler Christine Lauterburg combines tradition and technology
8 Australian Mary Schneider's Yodelling the Classics became a cult hit which lead her to record a Yodeling the Classics Vol. 2. This track is from the latter CD.
9 Field recording by Alan Lomax
10 Hank William made his Opry debut on June 11, 1949. This performance was recorded one week later.
12 Hank William's grandson loves to yodel, too.
14 King Wilkie named themselves after Bill Monroe's horse, and it's therefore not surprising that this young and promising band plays traditional bluegrass. This song was written by Jimmie Davies of "You Are My Sunshine" fame.
15 If the singers of this Spanish song seem to have a German accent it's because the band is from Hamburg.
16 Thanks to Sean Lally for this track
17 If Riders in the Sky ever play in a venue near you, make sure to go and see them. They are a lot of fun.
18 Newsweek nicknamed Don Walser "the Pavarotti of the Plains"
19 Yahoo yodeler Wylie Gustafson's semi-autobiographic theme song
20 Thanks to Jenergy for this track
21 Randy Erwin both covers classic yodel songs and writes new ones. This is one of his own.
22 Gillian Welch demonstrated that a soulful yodel in slow motion can be as impressive as a speed-yodel

Feedback:
Wonderful. It's great to see Don Walser here!
avant garde dub yodelling - now that is a sub-genre I know nothing about!
The best one yet Claude!
This is so damn cool. Love the Hirsch/Weinstein opener especially.
I love LOVE the welch pick. and the rest is equally chi-soothing. well done.
"Jolladahnti" . . . oder so Shnlich. Another barrel of rrrrrrrrollicking, frrrrrrrrrolicking fun. And a damn brilliant cover to boot.
Absolutely marvelous here. Another thoroughly compiled mix!
I'm sure that this is interesting, based upon your other volumes...
I admit it, I'm curious! Will you send me a copy?
This series has obviously been included in the "trainspotter's paradise" exhibit. Looks fantastic.
awsome stuff, hank williams, and The Grandsons of the Pioneers. nice.
great looking cover Claude: you know I liked the previous 2, so when things here *slow* down, let's make another trade............
Your opening set is completely mysterious to me but once you get into the wild west territory I know I'm in yodelin' heaven, so I would say I HAVE to hear this. Don't you agree?
Looks yodel-icious once again Claude. I too would like to complete the yodeling trilogy, as I'm a proud owner of the first two. Would love to trade again when you're up to it.
Hey - another great volume in the series! This one looks boss.
You sure are committed to yodel! Nicely put together from top to bottom.
I've loved your three volumes immensely. Nice to see a bit of Hank on this one. I'm also happy to see Robert Palmer's 'Change His Ways' didn't make any of the comps ( quite possibly the WORST yodeling song of all time! )
That Edelweiss tune really takes me back... some Alpine Jazz Herd would be great with this.
hello lanham,
i notice that yr mixes do me the honor of copying almost directly from either my radio show playlists or my book. that is fine. great, but at least give some credit where it is due. now working on book 2 YODEL IN HIFI. hope yr interested...
btw: you've turned me onto some stuff i wasn't aware of too.

YODEL-AY-EE-OOOO: THE SECRET HISTORY OF YODELING AROUND THE WORLD.
Hey Bart,
Good to hear from you. You are correct, this mix is strongly influenced by your book, which broadened my yodeling horizon immensely. I did mention your book right in the beginning of my notes for "The Joy of Yodeling, Vol. 1," however. Maybe I should have repeated the credit for each installment of this series.
I hope the work on your book is coming along nicely, looking forward to reading it.
Btw, I'm surprised it took you so long to find this mix... :-).
And I was surprised to get an email from AOTM, since I haven't posted anything here for several years.
