Comment:

Back in the day, mod kids loved their parkas and their northern soul and twee kids loved their anoraks and their indie pop. Both treasure their obscure finds and 3 minutes of pop bliss.

This mix blends my two favorite genres. I took some of my favorite northern soul songs and mixed them with indie pop that reminds me of northern soul in one way or another.

I know someone will say I need to have to Dobie Gray song that Spearmint used the beat from for their song, but i find that song pretty boring.

The "Unknown" artist for track #16 really is unknown, it's not because I'm too lazy to track them down. The song was never pressed into a record, but Mr. Finewine, the WFMU soul dj, got the acetate from his uncle, who used to work in a detroit recording studio in the 60s. He put it out on a rare WFMU fundraising cd a few years ago. How's that for obscure? It's actually much better than the version of the same song recorded by the girl garage group The What Four, which can be found on various comps. The unknown version has a funky organ groove and much better vocals.

And yes, Erma Franklin is Aretha's sister.

Long live northern soul!
