Comment:
I've been thinking a lot about the demise of radio recently and wanted to make a brief series of mixes documenting its cultural significance and more accurately its significance to me personally. I cant remember the last time i listened to music radio here in the UK. The inane banter and calculated playlists really make me nauseous. M. Ward last year released an album called Transistor Radio which was an homage to the sounds he grew up listening to. I heard him speak very eloquently in an interview of his fears for the future of radio and its dwindling ability to champion new artists and directly influence youth culture like it once did, and I identified with that alienation big time. This disc I guess is a tribute to the late great John Peel. I won't start speaking in platitudes about this radio giant, its all been said already. His importance is not opinion it is fact. These tracks are my picks from his much coveted Festive 50 end of year round up between 1985 - 2003. The full archive can be viewed here :http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/festive50.htm

Feedback:
I was thinking of doing a similar mix a while ago but never got round to it. My personal faves come from 87, 89, 90, 97 and 98. Heard Patio song on the radio just this morning also. It brightened up my day!
Just finished reading 'Margrave of the Marshes' - made me shed a tear for the much missed Monsieur Ravenscroft; I'd been thinking of producing the same sort of mix too, woulda added a Smiths track tho. All the same top mix.
Classic stuff. Don't give up on radio.
Well, you both have/had superior taste.
Hold your horses, I'm still mourning the demise of the telegraph.
the demise of the radio is in the eye of the beholder and the musical styles which you like
Congrat's!!! (There are quite a few still-great radio stations 'round, though the sentiment & perception is dead on!)
Thanks Valis, I agree by the way, I intend to explore some of those in later volumes. Everybody loves a happy ending.
Congrats...and your point is absolutely dead on!
Rather listen to the sounds of the road than most of what's on the air.
But every now and then...like 89.1 in North Jersey (it's either WFDU or WNYU...not sure)late afternoons/early afternoons the music is absolutely fantastic! Though the DJs are so bad, they're good.

good job - well done - congratulations. Yep, I too miss the radio (not digital or internet stations, cos they are fantastic and getting better), but just the FM stations that you can listen to in the kitchen and dance around to with the kids. Having said that, you are much better served in the UK than we are here in Dubai, but nevertheless, you make the point well. I guess we have all played around with the festive 50s as a concept, but I for one never got as far as finalising a play list and posting. Well done again.
Great work, congrats on MOTW. I occasionally listen to Australia's only 'alternative' radio station, Triple J, but they've really dropped in quality as of late, what with all the 'aussie hip-hop' they've started indulging in. However, there are still a few good timeslots left. Nice work.
Kudos for MotW!
Yr right about commercial radio - haven't listened to it for forever...but college
radio stations...now that's another story. I live about 20 miles north of Princeton, NJ
& WPRB is about as great a station as I've ever
listened to. There's early AM Classical,
mid morning Avant Jazz, students spinning afternoon Indie tunes & late night experimental
& ambient soundz--there's even a show for my kids on Saturdays. All that + call in requests
that actually get played.
That being said, some of my friends [still] sit around every evening & they
worry about the times ahead...

Radio has sucked since they took "The Lone Ranger" off the air. But seriously, commercial radio has very little to offer us AOTMers with discriminating taste. Fantastic mix too -- I know (and love) all but a few songs. Congrats on MOW~
Congratulations on motw... some corkers here. 6-7, what a great match!
Congrats on MOTW! I am not mourning the demise of music radio - other means are taking its place. And hey, it's not that I am getting old or anything, but more and more people that I know view radio as a source of talk, not music.
... the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools/tryin' to anaesthetise the way that you feelCommercial radio's death was knell was sounded here in the New York area when some jack-off decided we no longer needed a link to the radio history provided by WCBS-FM. There are plenty of great non-commercial/college niche stations (WBGO for jazz, WKCR for jazz/new music, WPRB as mentioned by g.a.b., etc.) and the always astounding, sometimes confounding, polyglot that is WFMU, but, the dial ain't the same without the old guard from our yout'.Wonderful mix o' tunes here and congratulations on mix of the week.
awesome classic stuff, and congrats BTW
