Moon Beam On A Cat's Ear
Comment:
For the sweetest angel, my 14-month old nephew. He is a natural born music-head, and now that he's found his legs, he dances til he's dizzy and uses any object around to bang out a cacophonous kiddie-concrete composition. He thinks it's hysterically funny when people sneeze. This evolved into a sort of trans-seasonal Noah's Ark, unintentionally -- guess that's life in the Great Lakes. Some are chestnuts my mom sang to me when I was a toddler, and there are tunes I sing to him as lullabies, some just make me think of taking him for walks and looking at the flora and fauna, some are for him to expand his repertoire of dance moves, and fall asleep in the crook of my elbow. His parents will probably think it's a weird mix, but my aunternal instinct is to nurture his musical proclivities. (Had to have Rare Earth because the first record I purchased of my own volition was a single of theirs, which I proudly spun on my Hey, Diddle Diddle-themed suitcase turntable. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but here is where the journey does a loop-de-loop.)
Feedback:
Beautiful!! Some great tracks here. i did something similar on a previous mix 'Childs Play' for my daughter, mind you she is a full blown indie kid already, my fault entirely.
Makes me smile just lookin' at the tracklist!
My musicological age must be about 14 months 'cause this makes me want to dance til I'm dizzy and use any object around to bang out a cacophonous composition. & you know, your nephew is right, it IS hysterically funny when people sneeze!
one can never go wrong with Joni in the mix
great to see Tito Puente, Etta James, Tom Waits and Pretenders mixed in here. nice one.
this looks awesome and has a great title... in general i just agree with valis. "Come Here My Love" as a kids' song is just unbearably cute and lovely, and "Grapefruit Moon" as a kids' song (especially as a closer!) is also beautifully cute and lovely... and creepy, which is always a plus...!
I pilfered the title from a Marie-Louise Gay book. As for creepy, well... when I assembled this, I remembered how I disliked feeling patronized by adults who stood in the way of my pursuits when I was very young, and I thought I owed it to the world to simply share such beauty. Besides, the kid is supposed to have crashed out with his baba before the last 4 tracks, which are really for my ears!
Swish... etta de cub...
This is just wonderful. Would you be my aunt too?
Brilliant! These are the years to "get the good in their head", as my dad'd say whilst playing me Burritto Bros, Canned Heat, Cream etc at me many years ago. I wish i had a) an Aunt like you, or b) some kiddlies, nephs or nieces etc to compose for.
Ta for comments on my mixes too.

yep - pretty sweet!
Good work Aunt Swank, though Uncle Tom oughta know that the moon is not a grapefruit but a silver apple.
dub into van...tito into spike...ending with waits. i'm jealous for your nephew, my parents stuck me with mac davis and engelbert humperdinck. so all the hard work of seeking good music was left to my own devices. i needed an aunt like you.
Thank you for the sweet comment! I love this idea and this mix. He's gunna be a dubby little dude.
Sweet. Sorry I missed this.
