Comment:

A number of horn players have influenced me as a Saxophone Player, among them Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Clarence Clemons, Bobby Keyes, Jay Beckenstein and David Sanborn, but by far the two that had the greatest impact were Junior Walker and King Curtis.
This mix is a tribute to the more prolific of the two, "King" Curtis Ousley. Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1934, he started playing around town in his early teens and toured with Lionel Hampton at 16. In '53 he moved to New York and became a session man with the likes of Nat King Cole, Joe Turner, The McGuire Sisters, Andy Williams, Chuck
Willis, The Coasters, Buddy Holly, LaVern Baker, Bobby Darin, Neil Sedaka, The Drifters, Sam Cooke, The Isley Brothers, Solomon Burke, The Shirelles, Nina Simone, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Mann, Wilson Pickett, Duane Allman, Eric Clapton and John Lennon.
Curtis was an established Tenor, Alto and Soprano Sax Player in Jazz, Blues, Jump, R&B, Soul and Rock & Roll, as well as a producer and the leader of Aretha Franklin's back-up band, the Kingpins. He was stabbed to death in an altercation outside his apartment in NY in August of 1971. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March, 2000.
This mix has a taste of all of his styles in his solo and session work, as well as a number of live tracks from his "Live at the Fillmore West" cd, which I can't recommend enough.

Im intrigued by this as it would fill a big gap in my knowledge. Any chance of a trade? Amen to Stan & Clarence as well.

Loved his instrumentals back in the day, but probably did not fully appreciate the depth of his work.

Dude, as much as sax in rock 'n' roll annoys me, I'd love to hear this...

Ditto on the Gnome comment! Damned fine...When one follows a master of an instrument, it is always grand to pick up on the work they did "back in the day..."As you mentioned Mr Walker, it has been my great pleasure to have seen a Billy "Sticks" Nicks several times here in the area. The Man is well past 60, still jamming with at least three different bands... and laughs at his work with Mr Walker. He told me that he doesn't listen to "that old stuff" because he wasn't satisfied with what he'd done... go figure!

Phenomenal. Don Byron has a new record out that's a collection of Junior Walker tunes, but I think I'd rather hear the Curtis on here that I don't have. Truly excellent.

This is really excellent - well done. You've selected some great tracks like Sister Sadie, and I like the way you've worked in other artists. As a fellow saxophonist, I salute you!
