Comment:

Last January, I made a conscious decision to try to stay on top of new releases much more than I had in the past (I blame you people!), partially to be able to do a Best of 2007 mix. I ended up with about 70 new releases and, along with all of the other music I acquired in the mean time, I struggled to give it all a good listen. For my Best of, I decided to listen to each 2007 disc all the way through, choose my favorite song and compile a two disc set. I started in mid-December and finished last night. There was alot of great music last year and Shellac, Lucinda Williams, Caribou, Timber Timbre, Flight of the Conchords, Jim White and the White Stripes just barely missd the cut.
For you trivia freaks, there are (4) family connections on the two discs, (4) Waits connections and (2) songs about Hurricane Katrina. Thanks to Rob C for turning me on to 7 of the artists, KC for turning me on to 3 and Mahdishain for another 1. Visit the Sanctuary Disc 1 Disc 2

I'd seek sanctuary in these tunes any day!

this looks incredible, mark, alot of overlapping favorites between us (i'll spare listing them for you to keep this comment from becoming a novel). wasn't a huge fan of the ryan adams album, but that song was indeed my favorite & i do love it quite a bit. sad to see the white stripes cut (what's with everyone hating on that album? i thought it was great), & the radiohead & robert wyatt are wonderful too.

Spotted three family connections right off, the wainwrights, patti and bruce, and norah jones and anoushka shankar. Mary Gauthier did a great Katrina song on Between Daylight and Dark but not the song you chose, so i struck out on that one. Sadly i've only spotted 3 of the Waits connections: He wrote Trampled Rose, Eleni Mandell is Waits influenced, hung out with Chuck E, and covered Muriel, Anoushka Shankar played on a cd along with Tom that a can't recall the title and have been looking for my copy for weeks, something about the dali lama. i will investigate to discover the fourth connection. Thinking about it, Burn is probably about Katrina since Anoushka was connected to the other two.

Mark, i just read your comment on my mix, spoiling my search. I've never heard of Jesca Hoop. I'm off to All Music Guide and Half.com.

Tom's kids ex-nanny?
Now why didn't that jump out at me.

mahdishain, I missed the Anoushka / Tom connection (that benefit album is on my wish list also), so along with the Krauss cover, Eleni (her big break was also opening for Tom at the Viper Room, where she was a waitress) and Jesca (Tom and Kathleen's Nanny for awhile) there is one more (it's a little thin, think the Wire). The fourth family connection is a little tricky. You whiffed on the Katrina tunes so far. Anthony, I reaaly like Icky Thump and "A Martyr for my Love" was one of the last tracks cut.

I really like the transition from Levon to Lyle, for obvious reasons. Looks like an overwhelming project and great job on the trivia as well.

Bruce and Patti's albums were both among my top choices of the year. Sad Lucinda and Caribou didn't make the cut but the competion was fierce this past year.

Mmm, Ryan Adams, my favorite Arctic Monkeys track, Ween, Feist, Pink Martini, Rufus, Radiohead, and Andrew Bird--disc one alone is enough for me to fall in love with this!

Holy crapy, but you've covered a lot of my favorites here. I was very impressed with that Plant/Krauss release. And now apparently I must look for a new Norah Jones album? blink Somehow missed that one.

Looks great, Mark. Lots of favorites and others that I would either like to hear or that just may have missed the cut on my mix. I admire your diligence on this project.

mark, you can't give hints in the google age. i have never seen the wire (i live my life without cable, practically without tv) but i just learned that way down in the hole is the theme song and steve earle will be singing it this season.

Fucking fantastic: Banhart, Pink Martini, Shins, Andrew Bird, Loudon, TMBG, Ryan Adams, Wainwright, Lyle Lovett. The rest is quite good stuff as well. My best-of 2007 mix spawned from the very same reasoning. What a great year!

Lots of favs here. Avett Bros, Wyatt, Levon Helm, Eleni Mandell, Mary Gauthier, VietNam, etc, etc. It was a very good year.

Man, not much overlap between our respective two-disc best of 07 mixes... and I'm liking that fact. A lot of great stuff was released last year and I'm still discovering a lot that I missed. I really enjoyed both sides here. Wasn't familiar with a lot from side two but really dug the Eleni Mandell, Patti Scialfa and Mary Gauthier songs. Great mix.

I've been listening to nothing but this mix for the last two days, this is right up my alley. Thanks for introducing me to Martin Sexton and Patti Scialfa, two incredible artists. The stretch from Martin Sexton to Steve Earle sounds perfect to me. Thanks for the download.

I can dig it! In fact, I might try to get a copy! (Hey, somebody else likes Pink Martini??? You should include them on your next "Songs Rob Would Hate" CD, as I recommended them for his ex-g/f's next cocktail mix and the very name of the band elicited derisive comments.)

I think I had the same problem/joy as you. 2007 was a great, prolific year in music. Andrew Bird was a great musical find for me last year, and TMBG's The Else was a joy (did you get the bonus disc?) I've been debating whether or not to purchase the Ween album . . . would you recommend it?
