Thought I'd kick off my first mix of '06 with yet another edition of Pet Soundalikes. You probably know the routine of this series by now -- songs inspired by the Beach Boys and a small assortment of covers -- including a lovely acapella version of Wonderful and a rendition of Cabinessence played on toy instruments. I have to share my long board with Valis, Chadzwo, Rob Conroy and Jamie B. They all contributed at least one song. Are you up for a quiz? Four of the songs above were taken from soundtracks. Be the first to name three of them (and the films they came from) and a copy will wash up in your mailbox. Name all four and I'll toss in some Mr. Zog's Sex Wax. And despite the cover, Endless Summer is not one of the answers.

I was the first mixer to get the answer right, as you can see in my comment below. If you can't see it it's only because there are technincal problems with AOTM. (You know I always win these contests, Moe, so don't debate). Great mix by the way. LONG LIVE HARRY NILSSON, UNLESS HE IS ALREADY DEAD!!!!

Your Pet Soundalike series is just awesome moe. Another fine addition here. Re:quiz.. The most obvious one i guess is 'Poli High' from Nilsson's wonderful 'The Point' of the early 70s. The Beach Bums track is on the soundtrack of De Palma's Phantom Of The paradise. I'm stumped after that i'm afraid. Do I win two thirds of the cd?

I only know Poli High - The Point, and Beach Bums - Phantom of the Paradise; both great soundtracks. Oh, and I see that sammyg123 knows this too... hmmm.... I'm sure this is as lovely as the previous entries in the series.

Funny, I was listening to the Heavy Blinkers on my iPod on an interminable flight to Ft. Lauderdale earlier this week (for work, not fun, alas), and thinking, "Gee, wonder when Ion's gonna do another Pet Soundalikes." Prayers answered.

Ah, that Mercury Rev track is one of my favourite songs ever. This looks absolutely fantastic, as ever. Great inclusions from St. Etienne and the Beach Boys too - wonderful stuff!!

Er, "stupenous" mix...yeah, a geat addition to a miraclous series. Love the Cale ("Meatballs II?!" What a tool!), Costello and Mercury Rev picks especially. I gotta hear The Tinkeytone Orchestra.
It's the series that just keeps on giving. Incidentally, I recently rediscovered Saint Etienne after totally forgetting about their existence for years; I'd heard their earliest stuff and not loved it, and had no idea that they had turned into such a good band. Gah, so much to buy...
Hey, this is really Really good. The Hotlegs cut makes me drool. I used to have the album and cannot recall the cut at all, but seeing it in this frame makes me wish I had This Album instead of That Album to miss. Wish you would make this available via the net.
Too much I'm not familiar with and that irks me. Saw St.Bob of Etienne last night giving an introductory speech to a couple of old 70's plays he had dug up for public viewing at the Barbican cinema. The first play had Toyah's first TV appearance, the second followed the fortunes of a glam rock band called Slag Bag. Both had many moments of unintentional hilarity. Classic line from one conscience wracked member of Slag Bag, "Rock is good, it's just that we make it rubbishy."Retrospective wisdom does make one rather smug.
