Mixes Rob Will Hate Vol. 1 - The Land of the Goofy
Comment:
Let me first say that Rob Conroy has been a friend and musical guru to me for about seven years. He has turned mw on to many artists who have become favorites (The White Stripes, the Mountain Goats, Of Montreal, etc.) HOWEVER, Rob hates alot of music I love. I actually love discussing music with him that I know will make him twist and writhe. I have thus, as a sort of twisted tribute, decided to put together a series of mixes of songs and genres I know he will despise, and do him the honor of not burning him a copy.Interestingly (at least to me) alot of the music we clash on fits nicely into specific categories (rock / pop songs with saxophone in them, artists after their first couple releases etc.) For my first submission I have chosen the overtly goofy ... goof rock, comedy records, novelty songs, etc.
A note; to make this a mix of quality, I have included a couple of songs I know Rob doesn't hate (the Waits and Camper Van have appeared om single artist mixes he has posted) but I know he will despise the concept, execution and results. And so, Rob, here's to you!
Feedback:
Wow - this is great. How could someone hate Spike Jones, Ian DUry, Horton Eat et al? It's just so . . . wrong.
I certainly won't do Rob Con-Roy the favor of commenting on anything you wrote, so I'll confine myself to saying that "Saturday Night Fish Fry" is without a doubt one of the greatest records ever. And how anybody in their right mind could despise Tom Lehrer, Buck 65 or Spike Jones is beyond me.
Good one. Love track 9.
Wotta goofball! Twist & writhe! I see you've got several clever mini-themes going on in here, most appropriately the opening series for the masochist . . .
I am ashamed I like most music...in the right context. This would be an enlightening mix for me...as a number of these artist have yet to cross my path.
I think it looks great. What a fine way to kick off a mix!
Lots of great selections!
Ha! You've finally done it. :-) I really like "Saturday Night Fish Fry," incidentally, as well as the Ian Dury and Ween tracks (as well as the tracks you mentioned that you already know I like/love), and I *love* the B-52's song (which has appeared on a mixed-genre mix that I made). I also do not know that particular Spike Jones track, but I have nothing against him...
Oh yeah, the Lovett track is also cool. But you're right about the others...
I have to admit a certain weakness for the occasional novelty song. At least you don't have "Mr. Jaws" or "The Streak" or other examples of 70s awfulness here.
Why, Mr. Petruccelli, you're not wearing your tie. Name the film and you have the result of listening to this mix. Only joking...or am I?
. . . not sure that Ian Dury (RIP) would like to be 'filed' under novelty, but I like the overall mix . . . .
Yeah, I stretched the definition a bit with the Ian Dury, the Jim White, the Camper Van, the B52's and the Sonia Dada but I do classify them all as goofy. :-)
I read the comments before I had a look at the tracklisting, and was surprised to see quite a few things I like, since I'm not usually a big fan of comedy/novelty stuff. This really has a lot of great choices. I could listen to that Tom Waits song all day and never get tired of it - and Tom Lehrer's always fantastic. Love the Spike Jones and B52s too.
Excellent silly fun and some damn choices all in one place!
Camper Van and Ian Dury tracks got me rememberin' days of old. Thanks for the memories ;)
Nice. I'd like to echo a comment Sean Lally made about one of my mixes to say: "And god bless Ian Dury."
